Spinoff to Nickname Post on Parenting
Do your children have nicknames that they prefer? Do they correct people if they use their name improperly or shorten it in a way that doesn't please them? Is it because you have made sure that they know their 'proper' name - or is is something they adopted on their own?
Robbie only allows some people to use 'Robbie' - he tells most people at school that he prefers to be called Robert and he will correct anyone who calls him Bobby or Bob or Rob or any other iteration that he finds objectionable.
Noah only lets a select few call him NoNo - everyone else is told "My name is Noah Richard S******* S****."
I think it's funny because I'm so relaxed about nicknames and have never encouraged or discouraged the use of any specific name/nickname - but they've adopted their own little set of rules around who can call them what and when!
Anyone else?

Madeline (said Mad-ah-lyn, not line) never corrects anyone. She makes up names for herself anyway. Just let her know what she could call her FH.
Yeah.. he's got an exception for pretty girls so I'm pretty sure she'll be able to call him ANYTHING.
I used to make up names for myself when I was younger too! And creative spellings for Jeannie - Jeanniye, JeeNee, Genee, GeeKnee, Jeakny..

Re: Spinoff to Nickname Post on Parenting
I obviously do not have a school age child, but as a person whose name is shortened (without asking) constantly, I really dislike it. If someone introduces me to someone else as Leslie, call me Leslie and not "Les". VERY few people call me that.
That having been said, Abby's birth name is Abigail. We hardly EVER call her that. When people ask her name, I say "Abigail, but we call her Abby." If she decides she prefers otherwise in the future, it will be up to her.

My SS goes by one nickname with everyone, but it is really the only one you can make from his name - at least so far!
When I was younger I corrected people all of the time, in my family I was Nina (I didn't let anyone else call me that) and my friends from the neighborhood called me NeNe, to everyone else (including school friends) I was Jeannine. I don't know why I made this distinction
I do remember the school librarian always called me "Jeannie" I hated it and would correct her, then one day she said "I can't say Jeannine I can only say Jeannie" and she said it just fine!

Re: Spinoff to Nickname Post on Parenting
My personal nickname for my older son is Boo and last year told me not to call him that in public anymore. Does that count? He since relaxed his policy and has allowed me free use of it again, which is awesome for me since it was very hard to be able to stop.
My younger guy is Matthew. We call him Matthew or Matty. Sometimes someone will call him Matt and he doesn't know they mean him. LOL
