Hospice in Queens
Hi
I am doing some research for a friend whose parent isn't doing so well and they want to put him in hospice care in queens.
Does anyone know of any good hospice care centers in Queens?

When my father was dying, we were looking into hospice at Ozanam Hall in Bayside. He never made it there though so I don't have any experience with the place, but I have heard good things about them.

My Grandma was at Ozanam. They were a Godsend! We were so impressed with that place. My Grandma enjoyed her last days there. My family took great comfort in the religious aspect of Ozanam as well as their caring staff. I cannot say enough about them.

My sister is a nurse and she said that Ozanam is the best place in the city for that. Years ago, we had my grandmother at a place called Beninson (not sure on the spelling) which was on Parson Blvd right off of Northern Blvd in Flushing and they were TERRIBLE!
Good luck, it's such a difficult situation to be in.

The doctor has to recommend that the patient will need hospice are in the near future.
A social worker will be assigned, as well as a visiting nurse. Interviews will be done.
Admission to an in-patient hospice facility is done on a need basis - basically the man has to be within two weeks of dying - AND space availability.
In the meanwhile, he can have hospice care at home. Hospice will provide all the drugs needed, any special equipment such as oxygen, hospital bed, wheelchair. An aide will come for a few hours a day, not every day though. A visiting nurse is available 24-7. Support is there for caregivers as well.
I did hospice at home with my mom, and my MIL was inpatient at Parker Jewish.
We tried to get MIL into Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehab, 164-11 Chapin Parkway, Jamaica (718-298-7800) but the day MIL was being interviewed, she was LUCID and they determined she wasn't ready yet. Two days later MIL was accepted into Parker hospice, which in the long run was better because we did not have to move her out of the nursing home.
Tietz is the best in Queens.

Parker Jewish is where my friends dad is now..
I am going to pass along the info for Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehab. Do you know if they take medicare?

Thank you, I gave the info to my friend. Do you know if that hospice accepts Medicare?

All hospice programs take Medicare.
There are specific guidelines within the Medicare program that cover hospice.
Parker Jewish is good - it might be better not to move the person to another facility if he is already there.
We had to look at different options because of space availability.
In the end, Parker became available to us, and it was good. My MIL had a lot of pain and it would not have been good to move her.
The staff are good - although we had a run in with one nurse, but that got straightened out very quickly.
The hardest part for someone to be accepted into in-patient hospice is that the case worker/nurse has to determine that the patient will die within two weeks.

I agree- my grandfather was at Beninson and we didnt think they were bad but then we visited my uncle at Ozanam and had my grandpa transferred- we were really impressed.

My grandfather was here. They were great. Not a bad thing to say about them. The staff was very accomodating, the place was clean & the grounds were peaceful.

I had the complete opposite experience. My grandmother was originally in Ozanam because we hear AMAZING things about them but they were horrible. We moved her to Benninson and they were soo wonderful and great with her. She had demetia so she was on a certain floor but all the nurses, CNA's were great with her and our family.

We moved her to Benninson and they were soo wonderful and great with her. She had demetia so she was on a certain floor but all the nurses, CNA's were great with her and our family.
I think every place has its ups and downs. We had one RN that was not as experienced with hospice care, and she kept telling my FIL that MIL was going to get better. MIL had cancer that spread to her brain, and was dying. She also did not give the proper meds because she was afraid MIL would choke. MIL could not communicate and was VERY agitated and in distress because of pain.
I wound up calling the nursing supervisor and the doc on call to get the meds delivered via injection, and then to get a different nurse assigned to my MIL. Hated to do that, but I couldn't be there 24/7. Other than this nurse, EVERYONE else was great. Social worker even came to MIL's funeral.
My mom wanted to die at home, so we did hospice care at home. Most difficult thing I ever did in my life, but so worth it to me.
