dye in the ovaries - looking for some advice

Hey ladies. Some of you know me... some of you may not. I posted a lot more during my first m/c, but after experiencing 2 more heartbreaks in the last 7 months, I just couldn't bare to talk about it... to even THINK about it. So I kept my distance, but never stopped thinking about & praying for each and every girl on this board. I hope all is going well Chat Icon

So after my 3rd m/c I decided to get tested. I'm fed up with experiencing such a HORRIBLE thing.... and each time I seem to fall into a much deeper depression than the last. it's scary. So my doctor ordered tons of bloodwork. Surprise, surprise the results came back perfect. The doctor said that there is absolutely nothing wrong with me, my miscarriages are probably all just a series of bad luck. Pregnancy is a game of dice and her only advice is to keep trying... blah, blah, blah. Yes, that's very good news and I am thankful to hear it. But seriously? Just keep trying? So i asked for ANYTHING else I can do and she said that I could always do the dye in the ovaries (where they squirt dye in there and then look at it on a sonogram). She said that she doesnt think it's necessary for my case since i conceive easily and since I lose them all so early (always at 5 weeks). But she said that it can't hurt to do. I made an appointment for the end of June, but I'm still not sure if I want to. It's so expensive to have done (if my insurance even covers it - which I've yet to find out if they do). And my last bills for the bloodwork are outrageous and they didn't even give me any real answers. So I'm afraid to uselessly do this. But then I'm wondering if I should anyhow - just in case.

My question is - - what are they looking for when they do that procedure? Blockages? I'm very confused what they're trying to find and curious why it would be unnecessary just because I conceive easy & lose them early. Any information or advice I'd be open to.

Sorry this is so long... I'm just not sure what my next step should be. DH says we should just take the Dr's advice & try again. But even he is afraid of what it would do to me if I lost another - with how horribly I handled the last Chat Icon

first off Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon .

i had two very early losses in the last three months and its terrible. seeing that BFP is so amazing just to have it all taken away shortly after..

i have no advice as far as the HSG goes - i have never done one, nor did my RE recommend it after either m/c.

my question for you is - are you seeing an RE??
if you arent i would RUN to one. i see dr. b and i highly recommend him, especially because he specializes in recurrent loss. he does testing that many other doctors don't do, so he can discover issues that are causing the m/c that others may not find.

if you are seeing an RE, specifically what bloodwork have you done?? my RE ran thrombophilia blood workup and discovered that i have a clotting issue that may be leading to the early m/c. he has a plan to treat it next cycle so that hopefully i dont have to go through this again. he is also running immune workup to make sure there are no additional issues there as well.

anyway Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon feel free to FM if you want. i understand your heartbreak Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You def need to make sure they are tesing you for the right things. I had CD 3 testing, karotyping, immune testing, genetic testing, reucrrent miscarriage panel ( which included thrombophilia testing for clotting issues). Also I had an HSG!

I would highly suggest getting a HSG. It will look to make sure you tubes are open.,...and even though they were to get your pregnant after miscarriages ( they can get bloacked from remaining tissue). Also it's important to make sure you DO NOT HAVE Polyps or a problem with the structure of your uterus. These two things can cause recurrent miscarriages. I would def recommend a hsg.

Here is a good link for possible causes.

Re: dye in the ovaries - looking for some advice

I was tested for:
Anticardioliolipin IGG & IGM
Lupus Anticoagulant
TSH
Prolactin
Karyotype
Factor V Leiden
Protein C and Protein S or G (can't read handwriting) deficiancy
Prothrombin Gene Mutation
Day 3 FSH & Estradoil Levels

All that came back completely normal. Not sure what else I'd need to be tested for.

Thanks bride07 for your advice. I'm going to do some more research on the HSG procedure. I'm leaning towards just doing it... but everything I read on it seems to say that it's basically for infertility which I do not fall into that category. But from what you said it might be worth it. Do you happen to know if most insurance companies cover that??? Mine did cover all the other bloodtests so I assume it covers this as well, but i've yet to call and find out.

I think all insurance companies cover the HSG.
You can either get a hysteroscopy or a HSG. They just need to make sure there are no polyps or make sure there are no abnormalities with your uterus

Ex. "
It really depends on the extent of the abnormality. For example, if you have a septate uterus, unfortunately, it may mean you are at greater risk of having a miscarriage. If you have a septate uterus, you can have treatment to correct the abnormality before you conceive"

It does look like the tested you for everything. I guess the last test would be the HSG. It very well could be just bad luck.

Did your Dr Suggest taking anything next time around when TTC.

I know most RE's after recurrent miscarriages put most women on Baby Asprin & Progesterone Suppositories starting the 2 week wait and continue on through out pregnancy. The Progesterone you will stop at 12 wk and Baby Aspirin u should take the whole pregnancy. If your dr didn't suggest that already, you may want to ask them.

Also, I highly recommend Omega 3. I take 4000mg a day. It helps to suppress NK cells or if your body has any inflammation.
Hope that helps, hun!!

I am so sorry you are going through this.

Thanks. Yeah, my dr had said that there's just nothing else to test for except the dye thing. So a big part of me just wants to do it so that I KNOW I did all I can. But another part is so afraid of the wasted cost if it's not necessary (as my doctor made it sound). Ugh... so I'm thinking about it. Thanks for your info though. It does help me make my decision.

As for the other stuff - my doctor didn't recommend anything next time around. Just to keep trying. My last pregnancy my regular gyno put me on Progesterone and baby aspirin, but apparently it didn't help since i also lost that one Chat Icon

Maybe I'll look into that Omega 3. Thanks

ITA with this. He specializes in immune issues and does testing that not all doctors do. After 2 losses I had all the normal work up down and everything came back normal. I went to Dr B anyway and it turns out I have immune issues. Im 12 weeks pregnant now and everything is great thanks to his treatment.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Re: dye in the ovaries - looking for some advice

So sorry about your losses- ( I too have been there as well)

having an HSG in my opinion is not going to change anything- you get pregnant on your own ?

What they do is put dye thru your Fallopian tubes to see if there is a blockage- for some woman having the HSG can unblock a blockage

from what I am reading you do not have a blockage.
so having the procudure will not change anything for you.

Unfortunately you are fertilizing crummy eggs. Have you been able to have any of your miscarriages tested?
I know for me they were all trisomy 21 that's why I lost the pregnancies, and it probaly is the same for you- you most likely have chromosome issues not immune issues and also like me you unfortunately are having what the "experts" ( Re, Dr, genetic counselors)told me BAD LUCK

I wish you the best of luck for a healthy successful pregnancy. And I also think a consult with an RE would not hurt....Chat Icon
good luck......

Re: dye in the ovaries - looking for some advice

while that is a bunch of testing - im not sure its as thorough as what an RE would test for. esp. an RE that specializes in recurrent m/c. i know i had a whole dedicated panel for thrombophilia (about 12 tubes of blood) and then another 8 tubes for dedicated immune testing. also a lot of what you were tested for (FSH, prolactin) are standard RE tests not specific to m/c.

this is just my own personal opinion, but if i were you i would take those blood results and see an RE at least for a consult to see if theres more testing that can be done.

Sorry to invade, ladies...

To the OP: Chat Icon
I was wondering where you went. i'm glad all your bloodwork came back normal, though it's got to be frustrating that there's nothing to "fix."

Like other girls had said, most insurance companies will cover the dye test. (I'm kind of surprised that your insurance doesn't cover your bloodwork). The test helps determine if there are blockages in the tubes, from what I understand.

Has your DH has a semen analysis? Those test for count, quality, and motility. Might be worth looking into. The "problem" might not be with you at all. It's much less invasive than anything women have to endure - they just have to do their business in a specimen cup.

Is going to an RE an option where you live? You could contact your insurance company directly to see who's covered.

my insurance company did cover the bloodtests, but even with what they covered (3/4 the cost) it was still so much for me to come up with!! I'm sure they cover this as well.

I haven't found an RE where I am, but that's also because i have no idea where to even start in searching for one. I feel so lost when it comes to this. This whole process is just bullcrap. I don't think I can handle much more of it Chat Icon

No, DH never got his semen tested. He just had genetic bloodtesting like what I had and it all came back normal. Who would we even call about getting that done??? Is it even necessary? I just figured that's more for if you have trouble conceiving. We conceive fine.

You conceive quickly, but maybe there's a problem with sperm quality. (I think your bloodwork would indicate if there's an egg quality issue). Ask your OB about getting an SA. An RE may recommend it if you start working with one.

If you're looking for an RE, you might want to check with your insurance company. With mine (GHI), I can search for docs by specialty on their website.

Re: dye in the ovaries - looking for some advice

I am in the same exact situation as you. 3 early losses and the RE found nothing wrong. Ran every test and found nothing. I had the HSG done, they basically run dye through to see if there are blockages. I was also told to just keep trying, I know it's hard to accept. What else can we do?? FM me if you have any questions about the HSG or want to chat.

Hey there..I've been wondering where you've been. I'm so sorry to hear about your 3 losses. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally think you need to see an RE. I feel like OB's only can do so much and RE's look at getting pregnant as a battle plan..I've never been to an RE but from what I hear from girls they really test everything and check in and follow up so at least you know you are being monitored all the time.

As for getting DH tested I totally think you should. I feel they normally do that right off the start. I would ask your OB to recommend an RE. The answer of...there is nothing wrong w/ you keep trying...I don't think would work for me at that point you are at. I"m sure they have osmeone they can recommend though.

Hang in there and keep us posted! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: dye in the ovaries - looking for some advice

thanks. I think I am going to call an RE pretty soon. I was looking up some and found one kind of close to where I live. I would definitely like to see somebody that I feel is actually paying attention to me. My regular OB rarely even calls me back and the specialist I saw literally sat with me for 10 minutes before deciding what tests to run. I feel like neither of them have given me the full attention that I deserve, especially at this point. It would be nice to see somebody who will at least PRETEND like I'm a priority. Chat Icon

And as for the HSG - I'll probably do that too. Might as well.
