Behavior Issues

I am posting under a fake name because frankly, I am embarressed. DS has been having lots of behavior issues for the past several months. We had him evaluated by early intervention but he did not qualify for services. He had hitting behaviors, biting behaviors, and most recently clawing and pinching behaviors. Today DH took him to a park and as soon as he got out of the car, he ran for a little baby and started clawing at the babies face. DH took him home right away and is not really talking to DS. We have been consistently doing time outs and that really hasn't been working as well. We are just really at our last straws with this little guy. It can't be normal for him to be aggressive with little babies he doesn't even know and are not a threat to him!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS???? TIA!!!

ETA: He is almost 2 years old!

I wish you didn't feel so badly that you had to make up another name! It's really not abnormal behavior for that age. I mean, you don't want it to happen, but it does. Is he verbal at all? He could be feeling frustrated because he knows what he wants to say but cannot verbalize it yet.
Also, at two years old, or almost, children have very little impulse control. Just redirect a lot, and if he understands time outs, continue them, but he might not be old enough to understand the cause and effect of them. Don't be embarrassed, it's a common problem for children that ageChat Icon

Re: Behavior Issues

You are not alone. Peyton just turned 2 and although she has never hit or bit a stranger, she hits my 9 year old constantly. She has biten her a few times as well. She really hits all of us but Jordan the most. Most of the time she is not even angry, she will just walk up to her and slap her in the face. I feel so bad for Jordan, who happens to be sooooo good to Peyton. She gives that kid the world and loves her so much. We too address it, but it does not seem to be helping. Peyton will openly say, "Never Never hit Jordan" and laughes. It is frustrating, but I do believe it is a phase.

ITA completely -- my son is almost 21 months old and does the same. It's his way of communicating at times. I just say no no no and redirect him. They don't have too many words yet so they must get frustrated easily. Your husband should not be soo upset that he is not talking to the baby. Also stopping him at the park and teaching him how to touch gently is more effective than taking him right home since he may not associate going home with touching the other child's face. Re: Behavior Issues

I'm sorry, but I don't think it's abnormal. Before DD was verbal she did the biting thing, at daycare no lessChat Icon
And as for the scratching she came home with scratches on her face, so someone else's DC was going through that.
I wouldn't worry too much, just be on top of DS at all times. Hopefully, when he gets more verbal he'll find other ways to express himself. He may be a bit young for time out, I know at daycare it was all about redirection. My DD is almost 2.5 and we still have to watch, but she's not as bad as she was. Good luck!
