When will this change happen?
Funny thing is that I recently went to the PO & asked for forever stamps. The guy laughed at me & said that the rates weren't going up anytime soon. Chat Icon

They are losing STAGGERING amounts of money Chat Icon

Right now its just a proposal, it has to be approved. If it is, it would probably be in effect in January 2011.

The increase is not surprising, they've raised rates the last couple of years in May (just in time for wedding season Chat Icon ). This May they didn't raise the rates ... I guess we are lucky they gave us an extra few months with the 44 cent rate?

Re: The PO wants more $$$ from you

It's really mind-boggling how the postal service just doesn't get basic economics. We got a PO box when we moved here 8 years ago and we kept it for a variety of reasons but they've made it so inconvenient to access it we're considering dropping it - more lost revenue for the postal service. They used to have counter service in the AM up through 7:00 PM and access to the boxes as well. Now, counter service is only from 9:00 - 5:00 - when a huge majority of people are working. How do they expect people to use the service? 5 hours on Saturday (with long lines) isn't exactly catering to customer service. You would think they would come up with some creative options to increase revenue and service levels, not just raise basic rates so usage levels drop.

46 cents to send something from here to Hawaii is nothing to complain about IMO. The feds have much bigger issues than that.

Re: The PO wants more $$$ from you

I still think .46 cents to send a letter where ever I want, consider the amount of manpower, time, salaries, fuel etc it takes to send it, is a pretty good deal.

You could always fed ex or UPS, if thats better for you. Ill take my .46 cents deal any day.

Nothing the PO is doing goes against basic economics, their revenue is decreasing so they are increasing prices and cutting services, simple as that.

If more people followed that kind of fiscal thinking, fewer people would be living paycheck to paycheck. Chat Icon

They are also a government entity which throws all customer service expectations out the window... Chat Icon

Re: The PO wants more $$$ from you

as a person who owns a small business...this sucks. Priority mail is no bargain these days if its over 1lb; even flat rate boxes that they advertise are pricey. I can ship UPS or FEDX for less $$. Numerous times i've paid for 2-3 day priority and its taken a week; i've paid $$ for express mail guaranteed, and its not delivered on time.

i bet magazine subscriptions i enjoy are going to go up b/c the periodicals rate is going up; postcard rates are going up..and as a business who sends out postcards..that adds up at the end of the year.

7Billion loss is a staggering amount of money. and this is the same govt that wants to manage my healthcare..im afraid.

I completely agree. 46 cents is nothing. If it helps preserve jobs, I'll pay the extra two cents for the 20 things I mail per year.

The USPS is not a gov't program. It is an independant company, just overseen by the gov't. They pay taxes just like UPS and FedEx. They just have less ability to make changes, like FedEx and UPS.

It's not just stamps that go up. Typically they raise other rates. Like first class parcels. Priority & Express Mail. Media Mail.

Their service suks real bad, as there is good reason why the USPS is so far in debt. More and more people ship their parcels UPS and FedEX... for cheaper and better service.

No one said they were a gov't program.. they are a gov't entity, staffed by gov't employees, partially funded by Federal taxes...

They’re a semi-independent government monopoly. They don’t pay federal taxes (and I would guess, but not certain, that they don’t pay local property taxes). They’re designed to be profit neutral and not make any money. However, they almost always lose money and borrow the difference from the Treasury at rates that UPS and FedEx could never dream of. Furthermore, they have government protected monopolistic rights to stifle competition.

Going off on a tangent though...

When you raise prices you also need to consider what amount of business you're going to lose - same with cutting services. My previous employer factored that into every price increase - what was the tipping point between increase and lost revenue due to lost customers. DH reduces his mailings and resorts to other means (on-line contacts, phone, referrals, e-mails, etc.) because postge has gotten higher - not a big deal when you send to a few, but if you're dealing with 11,000 clients it adds up. Look at how many people have cut or eliminated their holiday card mailings because of the cost of postage. How many people are now trying to quit smoking because the tax increase made it cost-prohibitive for them. Look how many people are moving off LI because the cost is getting to be too high. Raise the prices and a certain number of people will say it's not worth it anymore and they will find an alternative. Add to that the lack of services and it further erodes revenue. I used to have all on-line purchases shipped to the PO box because it wasn't left on the porch and I could pick it up after work. Now, because of the reduced hours I can only pick it up on Saturday morning so I now use the UPS option and ship to DH's office. More lost revenue. Raising prices and cutting service is NOT always the way to be fiscally responsible - they should be looking at ways to increase revenue. Why not expand the UPS to PO option? I think it's LL Bean that will send UPS Ground to the PO to finish delivery - sounds like a win-win for both and they should be trying to promote that with a number of companies.

I definitely think that the USPS should only deliver mail 5 days a week or less. I usually only get a few piece each day and they are not urgent that they couldn't wait a day.

Make it 5 days a week and close one of the three within 2 miles of my house! Is there a need for that?
