First homework assignment for Kindergarten
I can't believe it but it is really official, my little boy received his first homework assignment for school to be finished by the start..
We have to read 4 books from a list of recommended and then make bookmarks for each one... It's for them but I know I will be helping him, he doesn't even read yet!!!
Did anyone else get this for those entering kindergarten????

Re: First homework assignment for Kindergarten
We haven't yet, and I think they would have mentioned it at Orientation so I am assuming we won't have to do this. Sounds like a good idea though.

Re: First homework assignment for Kindergarten
They each got 'love letters' from their kindergarten teachers a few weeks before school started. At their orientation they were given little gift bags with 'first day' coloring books, crayons and stickers - but they weren't given any homework assignments until October. It's neat that your teacher is so on it!!

Wow... We didn't get any homework for Bella.
I am reading with her, work on her numbers and having her practice her letters so she stays "fresh" for September. I read a bunch of studies about children and the need for summer learning retention, so I think it's a good thing....

Re: First homework assignment for Kindergarten
When we registered Nate in May, they gave us a book for him. They haven't scheduled the orientation yet, but I'm assuming we'll be getting something more then.
He's actually reading pretty well already, so we're just reinforcing at home. He's also still at the daycare that he's been going to until the end of Aug, so he's still in a learning environment.

Re: First homework assignment for Kindergarten
Yes. When my DD was entering K for the summer she had a reading packet to complete. Now entering 1st she has had quite a bit of homework to do over the summer. It's great to have it.

Re: First homework assignment for Kindergarten
It's crazy!!! Kindergarten is NOT the same as when we went. DD just finished kindergarten and she had a lot of homework AND a parent sign-off reading sheet for 15-20 minutes of reading EVERY night (including weekends/holidays)! In addition, she had a weekly book report sheet every Monday that took anywhere from 15-40 minutes (longer in the beginning of the year) to complete. A take-home book also came home every night to read.
Although the work load was rigorous for kindergarten it didn't bother me. I was just surprised. I was so proud of her progress and all her efforts. She can now read the Level 1 books all by herself!
Her kindergarten teacher sent home a folder with work to keep up their skills over the summer. She was kinda annoyed w/ that
All I have from first grade is the supply list...but it's quite a list!!!

Re: First homework assignment for Kindergarten
The day of DS's Kindergarten graduation, he was sent home with a packet from his 1st grade teacher! He has to do two book reports this summer! I don't think it's an issue, he loves to read and we do every night anyway!

I agree..i think the work is a bit much, but iam actually happy my daughter gets this kind of work in K, to prepare her for the later grades. a co worker of mine told me her daughters homework at an alternative public school in K was JUST to read every night, 15 mins and thats it.. ...and this was HW for the whole year
