My son is going to pre-k in the fall, not kindergarten....

- Lots of reading together
- While reading, sometimes working on recognizing words and sounding out ones he doesn't recognize,
- A couple of preschool activity workbooks that have a mix of activities-- some writing exercises, simple mazes, connect the dots, etc

That's about it.

Basal Reading books. Level 1 for pre-K and entering K to start. My daughter started with those in pre-K and after finishing kindergarten is now on the mid-year 2nd grade reading level. We are keeping up with the recommended reading lists from the school packet as well as other activities that were given. Plus her chapter books.

You can pull up site word lists, go through those and just have your child start on level one basal readers. You can get them anywhere.

My daugther who is entereing 2nd grade is supposed to write in a journal daily, of course I have a hard time getting her to do it Chat Icon

But, she loves to read! And, in camp for one hour she practices her math facts, etc.

My younger one is entering K. Honestly, at home I don't do anything but read a lot, we talk a lot and she plays! I don't find it necessary right now to do much more, there will be enough in K! In camp they do some tracing of letters I think.

im a teacher in pre-k..i always tell parents that reading is very important. also, if you go to barnes and noble, they have a section where they have some books like "preparing for k" , "getting ready for k"...these books are pretty good and you can get them at the beginning of the summer and work on it throughout the whoe summer.
they have activities like working on writing the alphabet, numbers, etc.
