Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
DD has been getting allergy related coughs since she was 18 months. They usually last about a month and are worse at night. She does not get asthma attacks. Our PCP recommended that we use albuterol and budesonide for 10 days with a nebulizer.
We went and got a second opinion, and this other doctor said to use the Budesonide for 6 weeks.
I'm just so conflicted about giving my DD budesonide since it is a steroid medication. I don't feel that her condition is that serious to warrant its use for that long. She already has been having nosebleeds as a side effect, and I have read about other long term side effects as well. I do not have a problem giving her the albuterol as needed.
Should I be concerned? Anyone else's DC have the same problem, and if so how do you treat it? Thanks!

Re: Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
yes my son has an allergic cough pretty much all winter and this has been our savior
I use it as I feel necessary...Pulmicort once in morning and at night
and the other one (forgot the name) when and if he is coughing or getting congested
I use it with both kids whenver I feel a cold is coming on and "I" feel it has prevented them from getting really sick...kind of like nipping it in the bud

Pulmicort and budesonide are the same thing. Budesonide is the active ingredient.
But it is not the type of steroid you might think. Like the liquid one to be taken orally when they are sick. It's made to be used long term.
It's a preventive medicine.
DS has been on it for the past 2 years. At a very low dosage.
ETA: It has realy helped DS not turn colds into really bad infection and get much worst.
I talked to a pediatric pulmonologist. We saw him every 3 months. And now we are doing every 6 months. I had so many questions about side effects, etc... He is a great Dr and reassured me.

Re: Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
Last year DD got a cough that lasted MONTHS... it was ridiculous.. we went between the albuterol nebulizer and this special cough medicine that has allergy stuff in it as well as a little liquid albuterol and sudafed- the pharmacist mixes it for us per the doctor's direction.
Both of these (neb & cough medicine).. never really did much.. so then we added children's claritin.. which sort of helped..
But the cough went on (seriously- most of the fall she was coughing) and we took her to an ENT... he attributed the cough to sinusitis... she got a sinus xray to make sure nothing else crazy was going on... and thank God nothing was...
The cough WAS from a post nasal drip.. and it was deemed to be from allergy- so she was put on one of those nose sprays.. the one w/ the bee... (forget the name) once a day, and then also the claritin as well.. and it did the trick.. and then the weather changed.. and it was over.
So- maybe take her to an ENT as well? I have a GREAT one if you need.

Re: Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
I suggest drastic measures.
I have done enough research on pulmicort to say that I am 99.9% sure it has stunted my boy's growth.
He started at 18 mos. Twice a day. There are a ton of side effects attached to this.
He will be 4 in Dec and still on it. We are down to one dose every other night. He still gets flare ups here and there that I treat, swimming this summer and the heat made life hard, so he went back to every night on it.
I moved into a new house, brand new carpet, ripped it up in his room and we put down laminate floors.
Hypoallergenic bedding. No curtains, no toys. Limit milk products.
Pulmonogist agreed to take josh off meds on May 1st to see how things would go since we basically did great all winter and spring. 6 weeks not on the meds...he finally went up a pants size and grew 2 inches!!! (i know this because we go to an amusement park once a week...he is constantly being measured)
Pulm was so impressed 2 weeks ago at how far we have come. Before pulmicort, we were at the ER 4-5 times a month. ER free for a year. Pulmicort def does work and it is needed...but I would experiment and find the lowest dose possible that works for your baby.
google pulmicort and stunted growth. I know breathing is important, so are meds...I don't care if my kid is 6 ft tall one day, but it just scares me that something so powerful is part of his day. at 18 mos, he was the tallest of his friends...now, he is such a shrimp. almost 4 and still not 40 inches. it could all be a coincidence...but i just don't think so.

I don't mean to be an alarmist...I just reread my post.
I don't have asthma, so I went into this blindly and have just been picking up info along the way. No one ever told me about side effects and josh's height and weight are never recorded at pulm's office either.
found this: Steroid medications can stunt growth in children and teenagers. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest effective dose of Pulmicort in order to minimize this problem, and will monitor the child's growth carefully

Re: Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
My DS has the same things, its allergy related coughs, HACKING non-stop at night.
He was diagnosed with Cough Variant Asthma and is on Albuterol in a nebulizer as needed. CVA is a form of asthma, which is allergen triggered and the only symptom that presents is that HORRIBLE NEVER ENDING hacking cough. Post nasal drip was ruled out by both his ped and allergist after a year of the coughing just being written off as PND. The big difference betweem CVA cough and PND cough is the timing. A PND cough will start almost immediately after them going to bed bc they are laying down and will start to drain. CVA cough will generally start after they have been asleep for a few hours.
I dont like DS being giving a steroid medication but if its between that or him being able to breathe and not have the hacking cough, Im OK with it. We only administer the nebulizer treatment when its really bad though, we try not to do it too often.
He is also on a daily regime of Zyrtec which has definitely helped.
Forget it during the spring though, he is on like 7 different medications to keep it all under control.

My son has been on steroids since he was around 6 months old...he has been on the high end of all percentages...
in my opinion, having a shorter kid is much better than a kid dies from an Asthma attack.
As a parent of an asthmatic kid, who also personally has has asthma, posts like these make me very upset. I know first hand on what it's like to not be able to breathe and have to be suddenly rushed to the hospital because rescue inhalers were not effective. I have also had the experience of watching my 4 month old son turn blue and almost pass out b/c of his inability to breathe due to his chronic breathing issues. Of course we are well aware of the side effects of using steroids in our children. However, in our case, the benefits outweigh any risks.
my recommendation is all parents should be well informed regarding any medication they will be using, by the professionals that are precribing them. Ask as many questions about them as possible and do what you feel is best for your child.
sorry just venting....

also, its only mildly stunts growth, its not like your kid is going to be 2' shorter bc of it. I agree with you, the benefits FAR outweigh the risks.

Re: Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
thanks. that's why I had said, I don't need him to be 6 feet tall...but we are talking about a powerful drug capable of stunting growth. that is what scares me.
There are alternatives that some people don't know are capable of helping. Stripping down your kid's room helps a lot. Never opening the windows....
I am going to try everything to keep my child's medication dosage on the lower side. Please reread what I typed. It is important and needed. Josh needs it. The question is how much does he need??
He hasn't been sick in over a year. Swimming and the heat were bad this summer. So he swam every other day and during off peak hours where air quality is better. I will live like this to keep him off of 2 doses a day, hands down.
Pulm said to keep him out of school this year, no problem he is out of school. Next year will be different, lungs will be stronger.

It is a side effect. And I discussed at length with the specialist. It has not affected DS at all. Everyone who has seen DS knows how tall he is.
For the OP, this is not something the "could" happen because she does administer for up to 6 weeks.

I should have added that DS has RAD, not asthma. So, it has worked for him. We also have taken breaks in the Summer. Right now, it appears that he "could" grow out of it. I have noticed he is much more resistant. We will see as he starts school and get exposed again to more germs.

Re: Pulmicort/Budesonide/Albuterol
that's right, 6 weeks on it isn't going to do anything to his height.
But he is having nosebleeds...it is a powerful drug. I am not concerned about the height of OP's son...I am just offering alternatives.
IMO, if your kid is on a maintence med, strip down their room if they are spending 10 hours a day there. That is what ped suggested to me and we saw a big improvement.

sophie, we saw a huge improvement this year regarding colds being a trigger. EJ's lungs are so much stronger then last year
