Re: For those that have taught kindergarten....

I loved it, but I have a friend who has taught 3rd for most of her career and she hated kindergarten. I think it was hard for her because they are really such babies still at that age and 3rd graders are so independent.

Yes! In the beginning I was like I can't do this! It's almost as if starting from scratch. But it started to grow on me. I was able to teach them the foundations to be successful learners in the later years, and to see them progress so much was pretty cool. I also loved being able to be silly and at times corny with them.

Give it a few months, it's tough especially if you taught older grades, but they grow on you. Chat Icon

With that said, I don't think I would want to do it again, but it was a nice experience. Good Luck!

Why do you think it's not for you?

ME ME ME!

I taught K for 1 year and honestly, I hated it. It just wasn't for me in terms of how I like to teach. I TOTALLY get how *other* people could love it - just not for me.

FYI, I teach 1st grade (this is my 5th year) and it is just a million times better than K to me!!

I know it's only the first day, but this was honestly the first time that I cried and said to myself....I don't want to do this.

I have most of my experience in 5/6th grade and the last time I taught k was in 1997 for two months (leave replacement)...things have changed a lot since then.

The funny thing was that the kids were adorable and my ds started k today as well...so it made me think of them. It is just so overwhelming what they want these kiddos to know and their such babies still.

Re: For those that have taught kindergarten....

UGH....I did it for 2 months and that was 2 months too long for me. I'm such a secondary person. Granted, I was the ESL teacher, and was only pulling them for 40-80 minutes and I STILL felt that way.

I find it funny, since while I was in school, I always wanted to work with the younger kids...until I actually got in the classroom and realized I was too sarcastic for elementaryChat Icon

This was my good friend's experience, too. She went from 6th to 2nd to K. She was miserable for the first 2 months. Now, she'll admit she loved 2nd the most but is happy in K.

I taught it for 3 years. Hated it the first 2 years, loved it by the 3rd. I teach first now and at this point of the year, they're not much different from K and we have to get them to be so much more independent.

Re: For those that have taught kindergarten....

Last year when I came back from maternity leave I was pretty much just covering classes. I dreaded anything below second grade especially pre K and K. I pretty much told the principal if she ever permanently puts me in anything below grade 2 we would have a problem because I can not do it!
