Literacy or EC Special Ed?
I've had a really tough year career-wise, and I'm trying to weigh my options. I'm thinking of going back for another certification. Which would you choose? My brother has autism, which was the original reason I didn't get Sped certification (I felt I would take it too personally), but now I'm kicking myself because every time I've subbed in ABA or inclusion, the TA's say I'm a natural and I have a lot of patience (besides the fact that I genuinely enjoyed it).
I appreciate the feedback!

Re: Literacy or EC Special Ed?
I have literacy but if I was you I would go for special Ed...literacy positions are hard to come by And spec Ed always has openings. (at least that's how it seems in my school)

Special Ed, Special Ed, Special Ed. I think there will be more opportunities than with a literacy degree by far.

A big YES to this!! Any degree in Special Ed will help you ten times more than Literacy! For everyone position that requires a literacy degree..there are probably about 20 for spec. ed (totally just made that up lol but just to give you an idea!)

Re: Literacy or EC Special Ed?
I think many people have literacy certs. I think having Special Ed. certification is becoming a requirement for all classrooms with the growing "issues" children have today. I am dual certified and definitely think it has worked towards my advantage.

Definitely special ed. It seems like there is more demand.

Re: Literacy or EC Special Ed?
I would say Special Ed BUT would you be willing to be a self contained teacher somewhere down the road. I went through this as well. I decided on Literacy because I knew that I could not teach special ed.

I was one poster that said special ed. But you raise a very valid point. If you carry special education certification, you have to know that you want to work as a special education teacher. Good point beautyq115.

Re: Literacy or EC Special Ed?
As someone who has a bachelors in spec. ed. and a masters in literacy, I'm recommending a special ed degree. I haven't seen too many openings for literacy but there are usually special ed openings, particularly in ABA. I am an ABA teacher and I LOVE it!
Good luck. FM me if you need more info.

I agree. You will have more job opportunities with special ed but you really have to love it to do it long term.

Re: Literacy or EC Special Ed?
Thank you for all of your input ladies! I made an appointment with my alma mater to get the ball rolling to get my Early Childhood Special Education Certification. I know it's not going to be easy and I am prepared to have the opportunity to teach a self contained class. I enjoyed working in the ABA classrooms as a substitute teacher. I wish I would have done this sooner, but like I said, I felt I would take it too personally having a brother with autism. But maybe that prepared me for working with students like him.
Thanks again!
