I am going to be sick...
Not sure if you have heard the latest. Apparently the DOE is planning to release to the press this week each teacher's data reports..with our names attached to the grade!!!
Here's my thoughts... *My principal was fine with my rating, compared to my peers I feel good about my standing
*Only teachers that teach grades 4-8 are subjected to receiving TDR's, not clusters or other grades *The tests that are measuring us completely have no valididty
I feel like I work my a$$ off and now I have to see my name published in a NY newspaper with my ratings published. I feel like it is a witch hunt. I know I have nothing to be ashamed of, however, I am completely appauld by the actions of the mayor and Klein.
Any thoughts?

edited to add.. For those who do not know what a TDR is..it is a teacher data report generated for each teacher in grades 4-8 based on how their students perform on the state tests.

Re: I am going to be sick...
It's complete BS since the state changed the standards/grading system this year. The method is completely unscientific.

Re: I am going to be sick...
It's awful. I was on maternity October-January with a sub in my room until the ELA. I only taught those kids for about 15 school days in September, but it's still my name on top of the report and that data will still be averaged in with the rest of my scores this year. Totally unfair.

I do not teach in NYC, but my department chair warned us all about this. This is all linked to Race to the Top. My district is projected to get under 80k total from it. This year, my superintendent is expecting about 10k.

WOW! I had no idea they do this. Out of curiosity, I'd want to know how I did but would never want that published for the public!!

Re: I am going to be sick...
The UFT is filing an injunction. Apparently the city agreed in 2008 not to do this, though of course we cannot trust the city.
My principal told us nothing about these reports- I found mine on my own- a bit of a PITA. You'd think, with all the $$$ spent on ARIS, that it would be available there.
I have no issues with the parents of my students seeing mine, but it's absurd that it'll be in the papers. How are they even going to organize the info? Whoever said it's a witch hunt is absolutely right.

Absolutely! In what other career do they give you a rating and publish it like that for all to see?!?!
I believe I received my rating last spring so if this is what I think it is, I am fine- but I think of how horribly embarrassing that can be! That is NOBODY'S business!
It especially irks me because this is not a true assessment of the work or creativity you contribute to the classroom! It's purely a numbers game!

Re: I am going to be sick...
Wait .. ok I feel like an idiot MY rating is just from 08-09 because that's the first year I was in the system (and I guess they didn't compile all the data yet from last year) So maybe for MY rating its just from that year since it was my first year there.
Sorry, I didn't realize that until now
Anyway though, I remember getting these results last year at a meeting and my principal told us all to not open it until we were in private because it's nobody's business. Well, now what?!

It's nobody's business till the DOE decides to reneg on an agreement made with the union. Guess we haven't taken enough bashing lately.

So if they publish this information - we should publish statistics on parent involvement, student accountability, increased class size, faulty testing measures, resources available to teachers in schools, and administrative support for teachers.
I'm disgusted.

You took the words right out of my mouth. My DH and I are HS teachers but his school just went through a quality review and it just seemed that it was all on the teachers.

DAMN STRAIGHT! How about attendance, how many kids went back to their country for a month and half and came back two days before the test! Which parents came to parent teacher conferences, how many signed HW? I could go on and on!

Seriously!!!
I liken this to publishing the cavity count per patient for dentists. Number of patients who smoke/drink for MD's... so many other variables that are not taken into account.
In my experience, I see HS students for 42 minutes every day. By the time they get to me, their habits, skills, peer pressure, parental involvement or lack thereof, and emphasis on education, etc. are difficult to change.
There was a teacher in CA who committed suicide because his test results were published in the paper

OMG that is SO SAD It's not worth losing your life over a job!!! I don't see the purpose of this either... to single people out as a "good" teacher or "bad" teacher... it's just stupid & TOTALLY paints an inaccurate picture.
