people who work in an office - opinions pls
Suppose you have an admin assistant. Or suppose you are one.
Is it normal for the admin assistant to consistently call out, like yell down the hall, "can you come here" to the ppl she is the assistant to, when she has a question about something she's supposed to be doing?
Also suppose that the admin assistant is approx 28yo, in good health, exercises regularly, etc. In other words, she's not incapacitated or unable to get up for any reason.
Really... I'm just curious. I'm still sort of new at this stuff. Please weigh in. Thanks!

No its not normal. I don't think its appropriate behavior on her part either. If she has a question and is too lazy to get up and walk then send an email or dial the person's extension. If the person whom you assist calls you over- I think that would make a little more sense.

I don't think anyone should ever yell down the hall for anyone.
As for who goes to who, I don't stand on ceremony. I will go to my boss with a question just as he'd come to me with a question. We might call each other from our desks if we happen to be passing by but none of that yelling down the hall nonsense. That's for outside.

She's the assistant, she should get up off her lazy a$$ and go speak to whomever like a professional.
I will call out to my boss when there's someone on the phone for him (I sit right outside his office) but when I have a question I always go to him... even when I had a cast on my foot.

Re: people who work in an office - opinions pls
I am an EA. It is not professional to call out like that as you mentioned.
I would always approach my boss. Knock on his door and as if it was a good time to talk.
Wow, she better change her ways real quick....There are many others looking for jobs still.
Like me! Hire me! I would never do that!

Re: people who work in an office - opinions pls
also wanted to add: in this economy, so many people are trying their best to hold onto their jobs and so many are out of work and will do an amazing job in any position, just to make ends meet.
i have no patience for people who take their jobs lightly these days.
people should be replaced if they aren't doing things by the book; too many would do a much better job.

I'm an admin and I yell... only because nobody is ever where they are supposed to be... I usually try to get them on a phone/intercom first... but if that doesnt' work, i yell. but i was also told to do that... they don't want me running around in the back trying to find someone.

I would not respond to my assistant if she did such a thing. As a PP said, that is entirely unprofessional.

What industry do you work in?
My mom works for an ad agency and they could get away with that no problem. I work for a law firm and they'd have our heads! My boss used to come out and yell at my co-worker and I who share a desk for talking too loudly let alone calling after attorneys.

I work for a scale company, its family owned (not my family) so there are 5 of us total... me, two brothers, one mother and a svc tech. one of the brothers rarely comes in, the mother is anti-technology.... so its not like a BIG business. I actually can't wait to get out of here. I need a better, more reputable job.

I am an EA and I yell sometimes. But I think it depends on your office atmosphere. Everyone in my office is always yelling across the room or down stairs (Im in a house made into an office) lol
