dogs and cats together
I have to new cats 6 months old that I had for a couple of days. my dog(husky, pit mix), Sasha is crazy about them she licks them, wants to play etc.. but they are to scared, they have been hiding under the couch. I finally got them both out put them in a seperate room and closed the door. still they are so scared they keep hiding i feel bad i have been petting them and such. my question is do think i should just put the dog in the room with them and let them just get used to each other.. i know the cats will not get hurt, i am being crazy or mean for thinking about doing this?

Re: dogs and cats together
Can you teach your dog the leave it command so that you can have some control over the dog's ability to give so much lovin' to the cats? Then maybe the kitties will feel more comfortable.

Re: dogs and cats together
they may also be getting used to their own surroundings. i'd let them be alone for a few more days and then maybe hold them and let the dog sniff them so they can get used to the dogs presence but still feel safe in your arms. good luck!

Re: dogs and cats together
give your cat some time. it took about 2 weeks for Ozzy to fall in love with Casey and now he cries when she leaves for her walks.

Re: dogs and cats together
Im mean. When we got my dog I just put them all together I did watch to make sure the dog wasnt agressive but I did leave them be to work out their own issues. Now they all live together pretty happy for the most part.

Re: dogs and cats together
Don't just throw those poor cats to the dogs! lol!
Let me tell you my story- I had my dog Irwin for about a year before BIL moved into the first floor of our two-family house. A few weeks later, he got a kitten. I loved that cat as he loved me and he always wanted to come upstairs to play but was deathly afraid of my dog. Everyone told me not to bother that they would never in a million years be able to tolerate each other. But that didn't stop me. So I would hold the cat on my lap and let my dog sniff him gently then I'd tell him to go lay down after he had his fill. Eventually the cat got used to being sniffed and got used to the dog being in the same room. The cat got braver and braver- starting my exploring the couch, then the floor, and then the whole house, with the dog trailing at his heels. In the end, they DID become best friends. BIL lives with his fiancee now so they have been separated but even now if you say the cat's name, my dog looks around for him. Here's some pictures of them together as proof! lol!
All in all, just don't give up. Just make sure that your dog is calm and the cats will pick up on it. Like pp said, they are just getting used to their surroundings, too! Just let them explore gradually and I think it'll help! Good luck!
