Help me think of a new career!
Some of you may know that as of June I will be unemployed. I work at a Catholic School and every year enrollment goes down and people get let go...
I kinda feel like this is my chance to get out of teaching, which is something I have been thinking about for a while. I have bachelors degrees in ElEd and Psychology, and my masters in Math, Science and Technology in ElEd.
I would love to work with children but it is not a must. I have been checking out some of the museums and stuff like that. I truly enjoyed wedding planning and that is a field I could definetly enjoy getting into as well (although I have no idea what I could do or if I need degrees or certifications to do it!)
Really, I am just looking for ideas that I could get into doing without any kind of formal training, or if you know of something else that could be done with an education degree. I am willing to try just about anything that sounds interesting but would prefer to stay on Long Island. Civil service jobs or anything in that realm would work as well.
Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks as always

Re: Help me think of a new career!
your background is really in teaching and working with children. But that that leaves you some open doors. Would you oppose to going back to school for additional courses? You most likely could go into career counseling, working in a lab, math and technology you could explore those options. Perhaps you should try to speak with a career couselor and they may be able to help you.

Re: Help me think of a new career!
what about guidance? college planning? or getting a math certif in upper/hs grades? (i think its not too many more courses since you have an mst!)
otherwise, you might want to try working for the corporate ofices of kaplan, huntington leanring centers, princeton, etc too as your experience will prove valuabel (plus you will be in the for profit sector!)

I was thinking about getting certified to teach ESL..... I think there is a lot of demand. You can pick and choose where you want to work (corporate, private, public schools, etc). Are you at all interested? And it it a noble cause!!

Re: Help me think of a new career!
At this point, especially with being laid off, I would rather not go back for any classes... I'm really looking more to see what I can do with what I have, or without any formal training.
I will definetly check into some of your ideas and thank you so much for your help!! Any other ideas would be great as well

How about working in the Education department at a Museum or something along those lines? I know you said you wanted to stay on Long Island, but I used to work at the Museum of Natural History and they had an incredible Education department. Maybe look into the Children's Museum on Long Island?

Do you mind sharing what the pay was like at the Museum of Natural History?

Re: Help me think of a new career!
It really depends on the position. I was in the Development department in a lowly admin position - that paid only in the low-30's. Check out the site: www.idealist.org - it lists non-profit jobs and you can search for education related jobs. The Museum lists jobs on there usually.

I keep checking there. Thing is I'm not qualified enough to TEACH in a college... and I don't seem to have the experience in the other fields... I keep checking cuz I would love to get into a college and be able to get more schooling for little to nothing!
