Need ideas for a new career
Years ago I went to school for business and marketing. Throughout school I worked retail and upon graduation I was a buyer for Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Very quickly after I started I got pregnant and married. After my son was born I was a SAHM. After 2 kids and 7 years I got divorced. I had to return to the work force. I worked for a bank and car dealer. Then I decided to go back to school to get my master's in elementary ed which I really wanted to do for a very long time. I graduated in 2006.
So...it's now 4 1/2 years later and there are no teaching jobs!! I have spent the past years subbing. Last year I returned to retail so I would have a steady paycheck and a flexible schedule so I could still sub. I now realize that I hate retail! The hours and pay are awful.
Given my education and experience what other careers could you recommend? I really need to find just one job that pays decent. I love teaching but it seems like it will be a really long time for anything to open up in that field. I would rather not return to school since I already have so many student loans to pay.
If you read this whole thing...thanks soooo much.

Have you thought about the test prep industry? You could really use your teaching background as well as sales and marketing. My company is actually hiring for LI and CT. FM if interested. The pay isn't great, but you're based out of a home office which is a big perk.

That's an idea. But I'm not sure how I would look into that.

Re: Need ideas for a new career
2 immediate thoughts....
1 - I saw a teacher position open at the CA Montessori School in Islandia. Great company benefits and small classes + I hear the pay is competitive.
2 - why not stay in Marketing but position yourself as an expert in Consumer Marketing. I'd like to think you can use your retail experience and your role as a buyer to package yourself in that way.
Food for thought.

Re: Need ideas for a new career
Well, I don't know what your idea of "decent" pay is, but perhaps you could spin your experience to fit a position working in a day program for those with special needs. At least if they hired you, it would most likely be business hours Mon-Fri.
The thing is though, the field of human services is already quite flooded in our area, and I think you really have to know someone to get your foot in the door somewhere.
I also would imagine that most positions don't pay a whole lot. Maybe in the 40's with a Master's degree if you are lucky.

That's an idea. But I'm not sure how I would look into that.
www.astd.org is the industry organization for training and dev. i'm sure they have some career related stuff. or, look on job boards for "corporate trainer", "trainer", "learning and development". would give you job descriptions. also, of course you could google it. or ask friends if they know anyone in Human Resources, and if they do, if they could introduce you to someone who does training for an informational interview
