Au Pair?
Does anyone have any experience with Au Pairs? We are considering all options and was wondering everyone's thoughts?

Re: Au Pair?
A lot of people have them in my town here... From what I understand it is much less expensive than a nanny-- but they live with you and you pay all their expenses. They are also only with you for a year, so you gotta start new every year with someone else. But they are young and energetic.

Re: Au Pair?
My cousin has had them for a few years and they have been thrilled. My aunt and uncle had 3 different ones for 1-2 years each. They were all wonderful.

Re: Au Pair?
My good friend just got one and she is great and the kids love her - but she and DH do not love having live in help...she finds it really weird and uncomfortable at times - like on Christmas morning...she said it's really weird.

Re: Au Pair?
That is what I have been thinking a lot about, actually having someone live with us 24/7.

Re: Au Pair?
My au pair just extended for her 2nd year with us...My kids love her and she has been really good with them. She spends the weekends with her friends and we hardly see her when she isn't working. I really like the convenience of having her, but we are trying to figure something else out for when she leaves in November. They can only renew once. Honestly, having her in the house really isn't uncomfortable at all.
On a side note, she did crash the car we got her and this has been a problem since my daughter goes to school!

Re: Au Pair?
A family I work with (I work with kids with autism) has an au pair from Germany. The mom told me that it is much cheaper because she lives there and everything is included for her. She only make a small weekly salary on top of that. It has been really helpful for them, since they have two kids with disabilities. But, they also have a whole seperate area for her to live in, which is nice.
