Re: Is anyone a buyer for a profession?
i'm not a buyer, however i'm a planner, and i work with the buyers (at lord and taylor). to get into buying, you don't have to have a degree in buying, in fact i don't even know if there is one......for me, i graduated college with a finance degree, and was recruited from hofstra for an analyst position (distribution of orders). i could have been moved into a training class for assistant buying, and then you move onto buyer eventually.
are you looking to get into the profession? there are a ton of pros and cons- like anything else.....

One of my degrees is in Buying & Merchandising, but I am not a buyer. I switched gears.

I did not like the hours in the beginning, and DH and I were wedding planning & the travel would have put a huge strain on us.

Re: Is anyone a buyer for a profession?
My SIL got an associates in Fashion Buying and Merchandising, but she decided to go into the display end. She ended up getting tired of retail but I know she liked her coursework.

The company that I was interning with would have required foreign travel at least 3 - 4 times a year.

I would like to in the future, once I finish my bachelors. I would like to transfer to F.I.t to get a fashion merchandising degree.
I have a degree in Fashion Buying and Merchandising from FIT....but I'm not a buyer. I did my internship as an assitant buyer....but I took my first job in store management (still retail) because the pay was more than the executive training programs for buyers. I moved from store retail (hated the hours) into being an administrative assistant at a distrubtion center (working with buyers and planner in essence). Then...I moved into systems. Now...I still work with buyers/planners as well as everyone else within the retail company (stores/finance/inventory control). My degree and learning about what buyers do, certainly helped me understand what they do...so I can provide them with systems and reports that are usable.

Re: Is anyone a buyer for a profession?
In college I was offered a couple jobs as buyers, for Macy's and also Bloomingdale's. The pay was not great--I think low 30's. Macy's said they would start in the not so desirable departments--appliances, etc., then you work your way up to the popular ones (accessories, shoes, etc.). One of my friends was a bag buyer and went to Rome, London, etc. several times a year to pick out new products. It seemed like long hours for the money, esp. in the holiday season. ETA: My major was somewhat unrelated--I think they just required a Bachelor's degree.

Because when I was starting out....store management paid more than buyers....so I went with the bigger salary (although it wasn't very much if I think about it now).

Yes...that is true. I remember when I was at my interview for Bloomingdales....it was for the executive training program. Most of the people there had either liberal arts or English majors....I was the only one from FIT. I never understood why people wanted to go into retail after they majored in English

Re: Is anyone a buyer for a profession?
I was a buyer/planner recruiter for many years. I must say, after hiring many asst buyers out of school they all had a very different idea of what being a buyer meant - and many changed careers w/i the 1st year or so. It is a demanding career.
