Re: DS is coughing like crazy in his sleep
have you tried benadryl to dry up the post nasal drip? I'm thinking you could at least give him 1/2 tsp, that's what my doc said and Riley is 19 months (she was 18 months at the time they recommended that). HTH

I actually gave him 1tsp with his milk tonight. Back in December when he was sick my ped told me to give it to him to dry him up. I guess I will see how the night goes & if he is up coughing alot call them in the am. I remember my ped telling me something about mucinex especially if the coughing kept them up but I don't know what dosage...

Re: DS is coughing like crazy in his sleep
your ped said 1tsp? I read that when I googled but I was so unsure since they told me a 1/2 tsp...but as long as it's safe, I'll try it! I gave Riley 3/4 tsp tonight because I was that nervous.
Sorry, I wish I knew about the mucinex!

They told me 1tsp bc his weight definately supported it (26lbs at 1yr) I have given it to him before with no issues but when it is not as severe, I give him 1/2tsp

when my DS was 22 months doc said he can take up to a tsp of benadryl. i would start w 1/2 than give more if nec. didnt really seem to help tho. the childrens mucinex dosage is 1/2 teaspoon only. I would try 1/4 1st than give more if nec. its one of the meds for kids that u have to use sparingly. But i would ask doc 1st about mucinex. but..... u def should stay away from dairy (esp at nite). my ds coughed for 3 months.... dry dry cough.. what helped was (after trying and trying everything oout there) omitting dairy esp milk, vaporizer, vicks in room on damp towel, keeping room cool about 68 degrees only, azithromycin, and 2 medications for nebulizer. the combination of the things above did trick..... hope ds feel better so soon. oh also prop him up and saline spray up nose!!

Re: DS is coughing like crazy in his sleep
The humidifier should help thin mucus, that's what they told me when my little one was coughing - but I keep it on all winter to keep moisture in the air anyway.
This is going to sound crazy - but after about 6 weeks of this cough/thick mucus, I got desperate (I don't like medications) and I "cut an onion". Yes - my grandmother did this - and I had forgotten about this old-wives tale, but wouldn't you know it - 3 days after placing a quartered onion on the floor (in a bowl) at the head of her crib - she finally cleared up...
OK - so maybe it was coincidence and the cold finally ran it's course - but hey - it doesn't hurt anything to try! (I've actually done it for myself also - and I think I'm actually starting to believe it!)
Google it - it's an interesting theory!!

Re: DS is coughing like crazy in his sleep
I second benadryl
I only used it a few nights way back then (ended up being a recall batch no less) but it did help. I was so nervous giving it to her.
Now she's 2 and a half and I live by it for night time suffering.
for dry coughs honey for wet coughs no milk, clear fluids
Milk always makes it more gunky for us.
humidifier is a huge help
Baby Vicks rub on her neck, chest, bottom of feet (then cover)
Nasal drops too
(been there recently, can you tell?)

My grandma too! But we made a tea with it My aunt recently asked for the recipe. Works like a charm! I have only heard of cut onion in water for babies. Its more or less the oils and 'juice' which is the most beneficial

Re: DS is coughing like crazy in his sleep
We have a humidifier that also has a small compartment for Vicks vapor to release in the air. It's GREAT!!! We don't give him anything else.... Never thought benadryl can start so young! Now I know to ask at the next appt.

Re: DS is coughing like crazy in his sleep
I called the ped they didn't advise me anything else other than the saline drops and trying to get the mucus out of his nose with a bulb thing and elevating the crib mattress. DS is little bit younger (15mts) and he's still under 20lbs - they told me no benadryl.
