Work at Home Lawyers

Anyone know of attorney positions (part-time or full-time) where attorneys are allowed to work from home?

Re: Work at Home Lawyers

Are you looking for a position that would allow you to work at home 100% of the time, or just a day or two a week?

Before I got into real estate sales, I worked as a litigation associate for a large Manhattan law firm, and they allowed me to work from home two days a week when I was returning from maternity leave after having my son. At that time, I had moved from the city to Long Island, so I didn't want to commute 5 days a week. Several of my colleagues had similar arrangements, and a lot of large law firms have telecommuting policies (to encourage -- in theory -- a work/life balance and increase retention of female attorneys). I know the legal departments of large corporations also have similar policies (several of my clients did). With technology, it's relatively easy to do.

I was definitely grateful to be given the opportunity to work at home a couple of days a week, but the situation also presented some challenges. Feel free to FM me if you want to know more about my experience.

Also, I had about 8 years of experience, though, at the time I started with this arrangement. I think it would have been difficult for a more junior associate to work from home. I don't know of any attorney position at a law firm that would allow you to work from home all of the time. For me, there was in-office meetings, client meetings, travel, etc. that would make working from home all the time an impossibility.

I have friends that do legal recruiting for temporary positions, and most of those positions are work from home positions (either reviewing documents online, working on legal research and writing assignments). So if you are not looking for a permanent position, that could be an option.

Hope this helps,
Christine
