Hypothyroidism and weight loss
I was told this morning that i have hypothyroidism when my pregnancy bloodwork came back and need to be on medication. My level was 4.22 and the cut off is 3.8. I am very upset about this. I will be on medication the rest of my life now from what they are saying.
My questions...will this affect my ability to lose weight? Has anyone with hypothyroidism been able to lose weight, i want to get this weight off after the baby comes...Will it affect my breastfeeding??

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
Recently I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I have lost weight from it (yea for that...but boo for being unwell ) .and am now on medication to try and bring me back to normal.
As I understand it, if your thyroid is not producing enough of the hormone you go on a med to bring it up. They have me on something to bring it down. The Dr. said mine MAY go back to working like normal and possibly I won't need to continue medication. I know of someone who was hypo who was on the meds for a while but currently is no longer on them as her thyroid seemed to have gotten itself back on track.
As far as not being able to lose weight, I think as long as it is controlled properly, that shouldn't really cause a problem anyway. I'd talk to you dr. about your concerns though.
Good luck!

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
your TSH sounds on the lower side. with meds, it could stabilize and become normal might not be a life sentence! pregnancy brings on hypothyroidism and then usually goes away PP...
its not a big deal to pop a tiny pill even if you are on for life. it will make you feel better emotionally and physically aside from the weight aspect!
it will also help you to loose weight if you are holding on to weight due to the hypo.

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
I initially was dx with hyper- 2yrs ago- My doc recommended to take a pill to bring it down- unfort I became hypo and have to take meds for the rest of my life. I was upset and annoyed that this had happened and wished I was better informed. 2yrs later my weight has been the same-- I haven't gained weight.
In the beginning I was very tired and sleepy and depressed- I also lost hair so that was stressful but 2months after I began the medication I was back on track...Hang in there...

This is common as synthroid is the medication you take if your thyroid is hypo or hyper. It sometimes takes awhile to get the dose right.

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism when I was 17. My weight has gone up and down since then. If I eat right and go to the gym then I lost the weight. If I eat McDonalds everyday I gain weight. I've been on synthroid for 15 years. My dosage changes every so often. When I was pregnant it went up and when I had my DCs it went back down. You'll be fine!

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
If you take your medicine every day you should have no issues with weight loss. In general massive weight gain is not associated with hypothyroidism most people have a modest weight gain (5-10 pounds) and it is often not due to fat accumulation but excess salt and water. You should ask your endocrinologist to test your basal metabolic rate so you know what you daily caloric needs are to maintain weight then you can calculate how much extra you need during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hypothyroid will not affect your ability to breastfeed.

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
I've had hypthyroidism for awhile now (diagnosed pre-pregnancy- it runs in my family) and for me, it's just a pill every day for me before breakfast. It really hasn't changed life for me at all. My sister also has it and the meds really helped her becuase she was tired all the time and didn't know why.
When I started the synthroid, I even lost a few pounds initially.

Re: Hypothyroidism and weight loss
i was also diagnosed w/ this when i was ttc. l was put in synthroid and my tsh level is stable now. as long as you are medicated, losing weight won't be a problem.
