What age to start allowance?
My kids (5,3 yr olds) already do chores like feed the dog, bring in garbage pails, bring laundry baskets to stairs. They do them but will beetch about it. I wanted to start giving my 5 yr old an allowance since he gives the most resistance to the tasks. I do not necessarily want to give the 3 yr old an allowance though. How should I handle this? Should I just give them both something so that when one doesn't do their chore I can give THEIR allowance to the one who does? Should I just suck it up and nag them to do them? WWYD?

Re: What age to start allowance?
i have an almost 5 and almost 3 year old. i do not plan on giving an allowance anytime soon. they still need to learn to do stuff without getting paid, IMO.
i never received a allowance as a kid. just did what i was told and ask for $$ as i needed.

I agree with this. I don't think kids should be given an allowance for doing their share of chores for the family. As a member of the family, everyone should chip in to make the household run as smoothly as possible. I beleive if you start at an early age, then kids grown up knowing that they are expected to contribute and help the family with the chores. I think allowances or special payment should be reserved for going above and beyond, like washing all the cars in the summer or something like that. But as for day to day stuff, no allowance.
My kids (ages 4 and 6) are responsible for feeding the dog, helping set the table (one does placemats, the other does silverware), cleaning their rooms, bringing down their dirty laundry. All of these things take less than 5 minutes to do and it is just second nature to them. Start earlier. Toddlers love to swiffer wood floors!

Re: What age to start allowance?
we do a chore chart for stickers that covers everything from feeding the dog (i help sometimes), cleaning her room, not being bossy, no time outs to brushing teeth and getting PJ's on.
She gets a sticker for everything. 75 stickers in a week, she does something special w/mommy (Wed we saw Gnomeo and Juliet), 50 stickers she goes to the dollar store, 12+ stickers in a day she gets an extra 15 mins of TV time (she only get 30 mins a day).
I guess this is sorta like an allowance, she gets rewarded for good behavior; we ignore the bad behavior.
This is working for us. HTH & GL!

I agree with SOME of this but I want them to learn about earning money and purchasing desired items with money they've earned rather then expecting other's to buy for them.

Re: What age to start allowance?
I started ds @ 5. We give him $1 a week for his spending. He gets $.05 for every magnet he earns on his chart.
I like it bc when he asks for something we can tell him to save for it.

ITA. I think having money sense is an extremely important skill to learn early on. We started DS with an allowance at age 7. He has one of our extra checkbooks, so he writes each entry in his book, the date, how much, what it was for, and keeps track of how much he has. He also records how much he takes out, and for what.
He gives me change when I give him larger bills, and I'm teaching him to make sure he counts his money right away (I sometimes intentionally short-change him, to make him realize why it's important to count everything).
At 7yo, he's already more fiscally responsible and knowledgeable than many adults!
