Upset about not getting a job..
I had applied for a position at the company where I work. It is 3 grade levels above the job I have now and for a department that I work closely with.
The Friday before my interview, I am standing, along with other people in my dept, around a co-workers desk. The department director, who is in charge of my dept and the dept where the jobi is calls my co-worker for something. He speaks very loud on the phone and i hear him ask my co-worker if she is applying for the position that is available. She said she wasn't sure yet but in the end applies at the last minute. When I heard him ask her, I got upset. why are you interviewing me if you really want her?? I went for my interview and I thought it went well.
Fast forward to today. The manager of the dept where I interviewed calls me today. He says "So I guess you heard that we hired someone else for the position you applied for". I told him "actually NO I didn't. He stumbles over his words and then thanks me for applying, yada yada and then says "well I guess you can apply for the position that will be open in your department and ends the conversation.
So thats how I found out that my co-worker (who they obviously wanted) got the job. I am so upset. I work my *** off, why are you wasting my time interviewing me for a job you have no intention of giving me!! I'm just so tired of the nepotism that goes on in the work place. I spent the day sitting at my desk, trying to stay composed and at times taking trips to the ladies room to shed a few tears. I also cried the whole way home.
Sorry this is so long. I'm just so tired of trying to advance and someone who they really want, gets the job. Just having a really bad day.. Thanks for listening..

Re: Upset about not getting a job..
Is there a chance you may not totally be qualified for the position?
I don't want to put anymore salt in your wound, but you mentioned that the position is 3 levels above what you are currently doing.
I obviously don't have all the info, but it *sounds* like from what you have written, that could be a pretty big jump.
What about putting resumes out elsewhere?
For me, professionally speaking, I've always advanced by moving on to other companies.
