Ikea for baby furniture?

We are getting our crib from BRU, but we really can't afford the 400$ matching dresser. Chat Icon Has anyone used Ikea furniture for their baby?

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

We have an Ikea crib and we love it! The reason we chose it was because it was the only one that would fit in our room! We have not bought any of the matching furniture yet but our kitchen table and living room set is from there and it's the same style as the crib. We like it alot. I'm all for saving money and I think Ikea has some pretty good stuff that may not last forever but is a great price. I'd rather spend more money on a furniture set for DS when he's older that he will have forever.

Just FYI:

Ikea Crib Recall - Link

But for other furniture, sure, why not? I had the Malm dresser in my apartment and it worked great for years. One drawer collapsed down a little from over-stuffing since the bottom of the drawer is just a piece of cardboard, but with baby clothes that shouldn't happen.

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

I hate Ikea dressers!! We have 4 of the Malm's and they stink! All the drawers popped down, and I don't think we keep to much in it. They also seperate a little (I can't explain it) We also have other furniture from Ikea and it's ok, but not great quality. We just wanted to get furniture in our apartment and didn't have the money at the time to get nicer stuff. Oh, our bed is Ikea and it's all rickity too.

Maybe you can find real wood dresser for a little cheaper somewhere else.

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

we have Ikea bedroom furniture and it is holding up nicely. We just bought for the baby's nursery too. I just couldn't see spending so much more money for the same particle board stuff...

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

We know two people who have IKEA furniture for their nursery uses...the cribs WERE highly rated, believe it or not, in Baby Bargains, but I would just go to the store and try out different dressers, etc...why not? I think some IKEA furniture can even be easily stained whatever color you want...just don't go on a weekend unless you go EARLY..

I don't know about their cribs but I don't see why the dressers, etc wouldn't be ok.

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

i'm not at all a fan of ikea dressers. Anything that has a HARD solid shelf is fine... but their drawers are NOT usually good. They tend to bend and break because the bottom is always a flimsy cardboard like material that can't hold weight. If you overstuff your drawers they won't even last 1 year. If you don't overstuff they will last a little longer... but they still eventually collapse.

other items from them are OK... but again.. anything with hard shelves, not drawers.

ETA: the tables are fine... so is any buffet like piece. I've only had an issue with their drawers.

Can I tell you I was SHOCKED that their cribs got A's in BB???

Anyway, I personally have had luck with their furniture and I agree that if the drawers are overstuffed, it doesn't hold up. I'm just thinking that for the baby's clothes, it might be the way to go.

After perusing their site, I'm thinking of the malm 3 and 4 drawer dressers and then I'll get cute little draw pulls.

Someone I know got this cute triple dresser type one and you could change the pulls..I think they might even have pulls there...I know I want to go back and get froggy theme storage stuff...they have an adorable kids dept! My friend has had their kids' table and chairs for YEARS and swears by it for what the kids do to it..

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

I bought an IKEA dresser for DH's clothes about 5 years ago and it held up just fine. The drawers never collapsed or anything like that, like some others have said.

So if it held up for 5 years with adult-weight clothing, I can't imagine that it wouldn't be fine for baby clothes.

Just remember that IKEA carries many different lines of furniture. Some are pretty junky and some are better-made. Go look at them in person and you'll see right away which is which.

Re: Ikea for baby furniture?

my whole bedroom set is ikea and i love it and get so many compliments on it. but with that said - 2 of my drawers in my dresser are completly broken but it is my fault because they are over packed - thats the thing with those dressers - you cannot overpack them!!!
