Dr. Marci Silverman - developmental pediatrician
I've decided to take DS to a developmental pediatrician. I'm so tired of worrying about there being an underlying cause for his delays. He presents so differently on paper than he does in real life that every 6 months someone is suggesting that I take him for "further testing" and it always sends me into a tailspin. I need some answers.
I think he has ADHD or sensory integration dysfunction which is affecting his processing. I hope I'm going the right route.
Marci Silverman is the only Dev. Ped. who takes my insurance. Any feedback???

Re: Dr. Marci Silverman - developmental pediatrician
we went to her. she was okay. she did nothing really.
we waited a year for the appointment and and 2 hours in the waiting room, and she did nothing. so basically it was a waste of time.
she was nice though.
Chris Smith- he's a psychologist from marion k salomon in bohemia. he was really good. he gave us a lot of info.

Can psychologists diagnose sensory integration dysfunction? Who do you see for that?

Currently sensory integration dysfunction and sensory processing disorder is not an official diagnosis. According to the Dev. Ped. we saw it is supposed to be added as an offical diagnosis in their new "bible" (book of diagnosis) that is coming out in 2012.
I'm not sure a psychologist can diagnose it. You need to go to an OT who is also certified in sensory integration and have him evaluated. I also believe a Dev. Ped. can make this diagnosis.

Thank you do much. UGH!!
Someone please tell me who to go to! I want to rule out PDD-NOS - by someone who will take the time to INTERACT with my DS I also want to look into ADHD and SID
Should I go to dev ped? Psychologist? OT? A combination of all 3?

Re: Dr. Marci Silverman - developmental pediatrician
I know this may sound odd but I would stay away from the developmental peds, and the neurologists. I've been to quite a few and none of them did anything. They just hand out a diagnosis (the ones I've been to) and it doesn't have to be accurate or founded.
CPSE should be able to fund a psych eval for you if you ask. **I think**
I would go with a psychologist... One who can do an ados so you can rule out PDD. they will look for sensory issues also.

I do agree with this! It was during my sons CPSE pre-k evaluation that he was diagnosed by the psychologist.
We have been to a neurologist (we thought he was having siezures) and we also saw Dr. Silverman..The psychologist did more!

I do agree that you can ask the district for an updated psych eval.
I don't necessarily agree on the Dev. ped though. We saw one that was recommended by my ped, by many parents at DS's therapy office and therapists. We had to fill out a packet of info before hand as did his teacher and we spent over 2 hours in her office. She also reviewed his test scores from his therapists. She did a neuro work up and tested him with a few different methods and interacted with him for almost the whole time. The psychologist we saw through the agency was great but didn't spend nearly as much time with him and did not get feedback from anyone else who interacted with him (such as his teacher).
We are going to get an updated psych veal. Maybe they will be more thorough this time around but I honestly felt more comfortable with the Dev. Ped. I felt like she got to know my son as opposed to just looking at him, if that makes sense.

Re: Dr. Marci Silverman - developmental pediatrician
My other hang up with the child psychologist is that I felt he was pushing for a diagnosis. He felt DS was at risk with ADHD and said we can diagnose at this age, and this was when DS just turned 3. I wasn't comfortable with that.
The Dev. Ped did not push for an ADHD diagnosis, she wrote in her report he is "at risk". She does not feel comfortable diagnosing until age 6 or 7.

Re: Dr. Marci Silverman - developmental pediatrician
I thought Dr. Silverman was terrible.
I brought DD to her at about 3 years old. We waited for over an hour in the waiting room, and then another hour in the exam room before she came in. (Great situation for a wild toddler)
WHen she finally came in, she was a mess. Papers everywhere, totally unorganized and unprofessional. I found it a total waste of time. I got no diagnosis- only possible this or that.
A few months ago, I went to LIJ to see Dr. Ruth Milanik. She was excellent. I can fm you her info if you would like.

Dr. Silverman basically was a waste of time for us....we waited forever and she told us nothing more than my regular pediatrician did. Wouldn't recommend her

Hi, LIJ Dev Peds- 516-802-6127- Dr Ruth Milanik
She did spend time with DD, but not a way you may be looking for.
How old is you DC? What agencies have you used? Where do you live? If you suspect ADHD, you can also see a Psych or a Neurologist. As far as Sensory Issues, you can go to a private OT for an eval. My DD has both, and insurance paid for both types of evals. [
If your DS is pre-school age, I would suggest staying within 1 agency for all testing and evals. We used Kidz Therapy. They are in Nassau and Suffolk.
I know how difficult it is to not have answers, my DD is 6 1/2, and we are still not there.
