Please recommend your Developmental Pediatrician

I have Empire United Health Care. I wanted to see Dr. Quinn, but she no longer accepts my ins. The first visit is $675 and then it wil be $160 per visit following. I dont mind the money if she is the BEST, but I was curious if any of you had any other recommendations that might fall into my plan.

TY!

I'm going to see Dr. Scherzer. He works for Stonybrook, but his office is in Riverhead. Not sure what insurance he takes. When I go home from work I can get the number for you.

Have you seen this doctor before?

No, I haven't seen him yet. My first appt. is 8/26. A friend did see him for her DD. She said he is old, but was nice. His number is 631-727-6785. I'm sorry it took so long to get back you you. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I DO like that when my friend saw him, he basically said there is nothing major wrong with her DD, and didn't jump to put her on meds. He told her that her DD MIGHT have the beginnings of OCD, but just told her to watch it -- no treatment right now.

I was only asking because I know several people that have saw him and thought he was awful, and misdiagnoses often. I hope your experience is better.

Thanks so much for the info. I think we are going to stick with Dr. Quinn and just pay out of pocket.

I am wondering what the difference is between a developmental pediatrician and a developmental psychologist.

Well, I've already seen Dr. Quinn. I set up this appt before I got in to see Dr. Quinn and figured I'd just keep it and use it as a second opinion. So I'll let you know if we get the same info from him as I did from her.

And BTW, I was not very impressed with Dr. Quinn. I've heard of a lot of people who use her, and rave about her, but for me, I was less than impressed. She didn't even really examine my DD. She did a few tests on her with her sitting in my lap, the same as the neurologist did (for reflexes and hearing) and tried to play a couple of games with her, also with her sitting in my lap. And that's it. Never looked at her sitting, never asked to see her try to crawl or stand, or anything.

We were told the initial evaluation would take 2 visits because it is so long and in-depth but she said the one appt. is enough; that we don't need to come back again. If I WANT to, I can go back in 6 months, but that she didn't really need to see DD again.

She told me that she wants to rule out a disorder called Angelman Syndrome. She said that the DNA test the neurologist ordered should say if she has it or not. Nothing else. No explanation of what Angelman Syndrome is, why she thinks it might be that, what's ahead of us if it is that, nothing. I even had to ask her if she wanted me to have a copy of the DNA profile sent to her. And that was it. Oh, besides recommending a hearing evaluation and OT evaluation.

Other than that, she is done with my DD. I was very let down with her.

I have not heard of that Dr. myself.

My cousin's son has Angelman syndrome. I don't know the specifics of the disorder, but know that he is a happy child and is thriving. He is 6 now I believe. Good luck to you

Yes, I thought Dr. Scherzer was horrible.

He misdiagnosed my son on the spectrum without doing any testing. Actually, he didn't even tell me he diagnosed my son on the spectrum. I read it on his report after I called for it to be faxed to my office, he never sent it to me.

What he did tell me though was that it didn't matter what type of therapy my son was getting, or how much- after all, he'll never know "what he is." He suggested I just get some therapy for myself, so I can learn to accept it, and deal with him. I was shaking leaving his office.

I did however have a little fun with him on the phone afterwards. Chat Icon

I really do hope you have a better experience with him. Chat Icon If not, don't worry. He's FOS anyway.

Sorry to hijack your post. I've heard good things about the doctors from Schneider's. Good Luck. Chat Icon

Thanks Catherine and Keri I guess I will just keep my appointment with her. I feel like if I don't I will beat myself up later on. I will probably be just as disappointed as you were!

I saw a neurologist in Plainview a little over a year ago. He put my son through HELL with tests...but only spent 5 minutes with him. He misdiagnosed him with Fragile X...we had blood tests done and had to wait over 5 weeks to find out that he was misdiagnosed!

I feel like Chat Icon most of the time! Why call yourself an expert? These are children! Be sure you know what you are talking about!!
