Middle School Teachers - Novel Wishlist
Just received an email from my AP asking if we had a wish for any novel (class set) and our wish came true what would we pick? With a baby, I haven't been able to really keep up on recent novels. Any recommendations?

My kids have been loving Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko.
Most of them really liked The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti (about a teen who spoke out against Hitler and was ultimately executed)
Also check out: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi (love his books!) Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliet The Giver by Lois Lowry

Re: Middle School Teachers - Novel Wishlist
If you don't have the Giver, that would probably be at the top of my list as well.
When You Reach Me will surely be a classic IMO (last year's Newbery) - great companion to Wrinkle in Time.
I think The Cay (Taylor) is able to conquer a few great themes, but it's an older book.
Stargirl (Spinelli) does a great job about fitting in and being an individual. They are in HS and there is a kiss, but the book is pretty innocent.
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a great book for girls, but it might lose the boys, although there is a lot of talk about Darwin and plants/bugs, etc.
Lower level, but still MS - Strange Case of the Origami Yoda
If you are thinking 2010 books - these were my favorite books:
Keeper - Kathy Appelt - My favorite book for 2010 - depending on your personal views, there might be some controversy - it may be a tiny bit young as well - here is a link to a review link
Newbery - Moon Over Manifest
One Crazy Summer - Rita Williams-Garcia
The Dreamer - Pam Munoz Ryan
The Boneshaker - Kate Milford
Mockingbird (deals with school shooting and Asberger's) Katherine Erkskine?
The Water Seeker (Holt?) was a great book about the Oregon Trail - not sure which grade you would use this with. I really don't like the Oregon Trail part of history, but i was hooked to this book and became interested in it!
