Just did my taxes on Turbotax- so confused HELP!
I just did my taxes on Turbotax- I didn't submit them yet though because it seems that I'm getting back WAY more than I expected.. here's my deal
The past 2 years I filed jointly with my "ex" because were not divorced yet but have lived seperately for a long time.. this year I'm filing on my own. In the past we've gotten back a lot but I thought it was because he made a lot.. I make hardly any money.
One of the guys at H and R told me that I can file "single" now.. Is that allowed? I did it that way and then went back and tried to do it "married filing seperately" (just to see) and it started asking for all my ex's info.. I don't know any of it and we barely speak to each other anymore outside of court.
I only put in my two W-2's, my son's school info, my college info, no donations nothing else.. and it says I'm getting back almost as much as I made
Is that even possible?!?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. I'm trying not to get my hopes up

I don't know too much about tax returns, but I do know that you get credits for a few of the things you said.
- Education Credit for you - approx $2,500 - Child and Dependent Care Credit - for your son - Child Tax Credit - $1000
So, right there that could be around $5,000 in credits...
Go through everything again from the beginning, and see if you missed something.

I guess it doesn't matter how much you made then?
Trust me I'm not complaining.. if I do get back this much we are sooooo taking a road trip to Disney
I'm just blown away that I made a little over 10K and I'm apparently getting back almost 7

You can still claim head of household since you have not lived together for years.
Chances are you qualify for the earned income credit and get back all you paid in taxes and then some.

I am no accountant... however...
Is your STBX claiming your son too? You can't double dip.
If you claim him and STBX claims him, you can land yourself in some hot water with the IRS.

Re: Just did my taxes on Turbotax- so confused HELP!
It could totally be correct.
Just make sure your ex isn't claiming your son.
ETA: just realized the above poster basically said the same thing.

How much did you pay in taxes for the year?
I dont think there is anyway you can get back 7K in taxes if you didn't pay 7K in taxes.

With all the credits, it's totally possible.

Oh I know I'm claiming him.. I have no idea what STBX will try to do.. but the H and R block guy said if I claim him first he wont be able to..( that it will run DS's social sec # and come back that I already did) I'm not even sure he'd try at this point

Re: Just did my taxes on Turbotax- so confused HELP!
I was actually told that I couldn't get in trouble no matter what happens because my son actually lives with me.. and he has for the past 2 1/2 years.. I take care of him in every way.

Re: Just did my taxes on Turbotax- so confused HELP!
You absolutely could grt $7k in taxes without paying that much. If you didn't make much, you likely are getting a refundable credit in the form of EITC - earned income tax credit. Depending on your income, that credit alone could be worth a couple thousand. If you have lived away from your husband for the year, you can even claim head of household instead of single, maximizing your tax benefit. There's a chance that you are getting so much because your tax liability was reduced to zero after all deductions and credits. Any additional child tax credit, EITC, and American opportunity education credits are refundable and can go straight back to your pocket, as well as whatever you paid in federal withholdings.

Re: Just did my taxes on Turbotax- so confused HELP!
My cousin is getting a divorce right now and was told that if her EX is paying child support then he gets to claim the kids. I have NO idea if this is actually true though.
