AM Workout vs PM Workout

Does anyone find that they have more weightloss success with working out in the morning versus in the evening?

I teach aerobics in the evenings and I've been adding to that time by either doing an extra class or running after work on off days but I haven't seen much movement on the scale. I was considering changing it up a bit to start running a couple miles in the morning or do a video or something just to get my HR up and break a sweat.

Just curious what your opinions are. TIAChat Icon

Re: AM Workout vs PM Workout

I actually asked my trainer if its better to work out in the morning or night- there's really no difference. (Although what you eat before/after could affect weight loss/gain as far as fat and muscle go).

Also, sometimes your body can get used to working out at a certain time. When I switch up my workout times it can be a little harder for me and I get more of an intense workout.

I don't see how time makes a difference in the body...I cannot work out in the morning without someone being a drill sergeant on me because I'm most alert at night.

I guess for some maybe they'd think there's a difference because it sets the tone for the day and they end up making better food choices.

It's all calories in, calories out in the end.

According to studies, it is more beneficial to workout in the morning. Your muscles are rested, so your body will work more efficiently (scientifically speaking). You also give your metabolism a jump start for the day, so while you may burn the same amount calories whether it is 5am or 5pm, you will burn more throughout the day if you workout in the morning.

Of course that's all science and research, I think it really comes down to the individual. If you're half-dead for an AM workout, you're obviously not going to get the best results, same thing goes for if you're too tired in the evening. I tell my clients to choose a time when they feel the best and can put their best effort in.

Re: AM Workout vs PM Workout

The only difference between an AM and PM workout is how hard you work and your energy level. If you're not a morning person, chances are you won't put as much energy into an AM workout.

ETA: if you're looking for movement on the scale, you might need to look closer at your food intake and changing something there.

I'm on WW and I bank between 40 and 60 activity points per week that I never use. I rarely dip into my flex points any more and when I do, I gain weight.

I eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day and I drink 8-10 glasses of water per day and drink green tea in the morning.

In addition I teach 2 spin classes, a kickboxing class, a total body scuplt, a "triple fat burner" (HIIT), and a 45 minute intense abdominal class every week. I've been trying to add running and yoga and other exercises in when I can but I really don't know what else to do because I've hit a major plateau that I've been at for over a year and I cannot break through.

I gained 20 lbs after I got married 3 years ago and for the life of me I can't lose it! Its very frustrating considering how active I am and how much I watch what I eat so I was just thinking maybe I'm working out at the wrong time for me.

I'm pretty good at being a morning person- once I'm up, I'm up. Although I'm concerned a bit about burning the candle at both ends, because I still need to teach at night. Are you supposed to give your body a chance to rest or is my body resting enough when I'm sleeping?
