Speech therapy

DS is 3.5 and has been getting speech through cpse. I think his therapist is nice but I don't think she does as much as she should. Is it possible to change agencies? Are some agencies better for speech?

I think you can call the agency or maybe even the district and let them know you'd like to switch.

Has he just started and did you speak to the therapist?

When DS started speech, I felt as if she didn't push him enough, but I talked to her about it, and she explained that she wanted to build trust with him before she really started to push him. Sure enough, a few weeks later when he was more used to her, she did start to push him more. From then on, I was happy.

I don't know if this is your situation, so the same may not apply.

Re: Speech therapy

You can change therapists and agencies, anytime you want.

There is definitely a huge difference amongst therapists. Once you meet one that is excellent, you can easily see the difference. Ask around for recommendations, call the recommended SLPs directly and ask them what agency they want to work through. The larger the agency the more therapists they have in their database. They could always get a recommended SLP to join their agency but you have to wait on the clearance/paperwork.

You may also want a speech pathologist who has a speciality area...ex. PROMPT, oral motor work, DIR/floortime..where they teach the through the child's individualized motivation or sensory needs etc. Traditional speech therapy doesn't work for every child.

Thanks. I'll see what happens at his review. He needs PROMPT but she said she doesn't want to do it too much because he gets annoyed.

We switched therapists after 2 sessions. My DS receives a lot of services and I could tell that the ST was not experienced with a child with his needs. Our new ST is fabulous and pushed him from day 1. Always follow your gut!
