nail salon and fungus
I just spoke to a friend of mine, she had a pedicure 2 weeks ago at a very upscale nail salon in Manhattan and now she has a horrible fungus on TWO of her toe nails. She saw a foot dr but she is pregnant so they can't give her anything other than a topical which is not effective . She says the salon she goes to - they clean the tubs in front of you and they open sterilized tools in front of you, AND she brings her OWN tools every time she goes. .... Now I read the thread about toe fungus and feel like I never want to go to a nail salon (and I just got a manicure this am) so scary. My friends dr told her that she should never soak her feet in a tub, just ask to have your feet washed with a shower hose (or whatever that thing is called) and use the cuticle softener and then do the polish, bc the tubs are breeding machines for all kinds of germs/fungi. It can be the cleanest place , but the fungi live in jets, corners and areas which are not cleaned properly most of the time.... I think I will be doing my own pedicure from now own and if I go to a salon I;m not soaking my feet

Re: nail salon and fungus
Yes the issue with the salons are those jetted tubs. Fungus can live in those jets- and unless they are taking the jet system apart, they are IMPOSSIBLE to clean.
So no matter how much they clean those tubs, how clean the place is, how clean and sterlie the tools are- it doesn't matter.
I am battling a fungus now and it's NO FUN. My foot is pretty much destroyed. I have no idea what I will do for sandal season.
If I ever clear this up I will no longer be getting pedis at the salon- no matter how upscale.

Re: nail salon and fungus
I stopped getting pedis a couple years ago for this reason too. I haven't had a problem myself but the thought grosses me out. Now I just polish my own toes at home, and do soaks, PedEgg etc when I feel it's needed.

Re: nail salon and fungus
My sister's salon does "spa pedis" Basically they have this ceramic basin, they wash and sterilize after each use. She told me never ever get a pedi anywhere where there are jets.
She's in Levittown, if you want the salon, FM me. The manicurist is from Europe and she's great!

Re: nail salon and fungus
The only safe way to get a pedi is for them to use a disposable plastic lining in the tub.. and every time a new customer comes that one is thrown out and another inserted. You won't find many/or any salons that do this.. that is why I go to a private person now.. No way do I want fungus's and any other diseases from these salons.

I'll FM you all the details. She doesn't want me advertising for her, as great as I think some of the things her salon does, she think it makes her look desperate

This idea I like. If I ever get rid of this fungus I will only go to a place that does this. They should all be mandated to ban those stupid jetted tubs. It's disgusting and a health hazzard!
