Can I get all the good and bad about East Rockaway school district.

I know its small and I have heard ok things about the lowers schools, but not great. Also heard middle and hs is not great. Can someone either conform this and tell me why. Seeing a really cute house there on Saturday. Rhame ave school btw. TIA

The elementary schools are great. They go from K-6th grade. Then you move into the high school 7-12th. I personally don't like the HS. I graduated from there in 1992 and it was bad then. I have a lot of friends with kids that go there now and they aren't happy. I am not sure why. It was pretty small when I went there. A little over 300 kids in the entire school. There are a lot more kids there now.

ER is a very small town. There is only 2 or 3 other people on here that I know that live here. Every school district is going to have its problems. I will see if I can ask some of my friends with kids in the HS tell me why they don't like it..

My husband and I both grew up in East Rockaway. We both went to catholic elementary schools so I cant comment too much on them (although I hear they are excellent). But, we did both go to the HS. I have to say I feel the education in ER is great. Is it a small district? yes. but IMO that's a positive aspect. We just purchased our first house in East Rockaway b/c I didnt want to send my daughter to any other district. The teachers are excellent in the school and truly care about their students. The school is also very safe. Do you get the occasional crappy teacher or teenager acting out? sure! but those are problems in every district. There are going to be alcohol and drug problems in every district (catholic and public). I never saw it as an issue while I was a student there.
It is also very easy to be involved in social events at the school b/c its so small. kids dont get "lost" as they may in a bigger district. I graduated with 84 students in my class and knew every persons name.
It's all a matter of preferance. I want to raise my daughter in a small community where literally "everyone knows your name". However, it's not for everone. Educationally though, I think your child/ren will have the same educational opportunities in ER as any other district.

I just sent you a ridiculously long FM....sorry it took me so long to get back to you!

My daughter is presently at Centre Ave and it's a National Blue Ribbon School . The teachers are great, principal is really involved and been there 20 years. There has been a surge in enrollment for the past few years, so I am presently trying to get the board to add some sections to the classes in K-3 because the town population is clearly changing. There is some weird thing between Centre Ave Elem and the other school Rhame Ave....got a little heated at the last board meeting. Not sure what that is. I try to be involved and the small size definitely helps for me as a FT working mom. I was chair of Special Person's Day and had a blast putting it together

The HS, as a previous poster said...is SMALL. 7-12th grade and about 100 kids per grade. Not sure what I will do when Bella gets older, but Catholic school is an option because I love the town.

Just will chime in about the town, since I did not go to the schools (went to St. Ray's and then to Catholic HS). It's a great town. I grew up there. My parents lived in the same house for 35 years, raised 6 of us there, and then had a 5-bedroom house all to themselves, which was too much house, so they sold it last summer ... to my younger brother. The block I grew up on is the same as it was 20-30 years ago - meaning its still all the same families. I know of 2 other people in my age range, besides my brother, who went on to buy their parents house. We played in Memorial Park and went to the Huckleberry Frolic every year.

The HS is eh, at best. While I know my parents sent us to Catholic school for the Catholic education, I also believe that the quality of the schools then also played a role. I know both Centre and Rhame are fine, but like pp mentioned, Centre is blue ribbon status.
