36 weeks...and have some questions

To say I am miserable is an understatement. I have spent the night in labor and delivery twicebince last Friday. I am having contractions that are often strong, painful, and close together... but my cervix is still closed. My bp is great, my gd is well controlled with diet, and the babies look great. I, on the other hand feel so bad.

My question is... if you babies were delivered at 36 weeks and you had steroids after 28 weeks, how was their health? Also, besides an amnio, is there any other way to test for lung development?

Sorry to sound like a whiner. I am so thrilled to have made it this far and that the babies look great. I just feel so bad physically, and emotionally at this point.

You poor thing! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Not sure if this helps but my twins were born at 33 w 6 d and DD did great was in NICU for 10 days basically to gain weight and maintain her temp DS was on CPap for a few days and then o2 he also came home in 10 days. They both had some issues with jaundice as well.

They are now just about 3 months and doing great.

I am thinking anything after 36 weeks the babies will do extremely well.

hang in there!

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

I had the triplets at 36 weeks but it was a scheduled C/S. I did also have the steroid shot at 28 weeks. Only my one DD ended up in the NICU bc she was born at 4 lbs 2 oz while my other DD and DS were 5 lb 5 oz and 5 lbs 4 oz and they went to the regular nursery. I went home with the 2 from the regular nusery after 4 days and my other DD can home 2 days later. None of the kids had any kind of breathing or feeding issues and THANK GOD everyone was healthy and 20 months later are all still healthy.

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

Thanks so much ladies. I am feeling a little better tonight, but am convinced that the only way for me to stay hydrated is to have an iv and a catheter!! Good to know so many babies did well around 36 weeks. I reallyy appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

My boys were born at exactly 36 weeks. I did not have the steroid shot. I actually went in for an amnio that morning to check their lungs and ended up with a c-section that evening. One DS went straight to the regular nursery with no issues at all (5lbs9oz). Baby B (4lbs 15oz) was in the NICU for six days only - less than 2 days for breathing issues and then after that was just getting him to eat. Good luck!

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

I understand your pain. I was in and out of the hospital with contractions from 34 weeks- 36 weeks... then in and out with pre-eclampsia testing. The twins were born 36w6d due to preeclampsia. I did not have a steroid shot for their lungs. They were both healthy and no NICU. Chat Icon

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

I just delivered my twins last week at 37 weeks 1 day.

Baby A showed little growth in 3 weeks so they felt it was time they came out. I did not have a steroid shot prior, nor an amnio to test their lungs.

Juliana (in the womb was Baby B) was born first at 6lbs and Katelyn (in the womb Baby A) was born 4lbs 12oz.

Neither baby spent any time in the NICU, but Katelyn did spend some time under the warmers because she was having trouble maintaining body temp her first 2 days.

We all went home together Chat Icon

I know how you feel, and trust me - it is still fresh in my mind. I always like to err on the side of caution and say as long as you can keep them in there the better Chat Icon

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

i was on bed rest since 30 weeks bc of braxton hicks that literally came every 5 minutes. i was on procardia too.

i was in teh ER about 2-3 times a week - every week - bc of the contractions. but i was like you - my BP was great, my cervix was closed, i just felt like garbage. i also couldnt breath well bc baby b was right under my ribs!

i got the steroid shots around 32-33 weeks i think and the boys were delivered the day i hit 37 weeks bc i went into labor - my water broke.

they were absolutely fine, no issues at all, never went to the NICU

believe me, i know how hard it is - i wanted them to take the boys at 35 weeks SO BADLY but my OB wouldnt do it - just hand in there, it is definitely worth it. the longer they stay in, the better off they are. it just stinks for the mommy!

side note - the second i got out of the operating room from my c-section everyone was asking me how i felt and i kept saying, "oh man i feel SO much better!" just try to keep your mind off of things (i know its hard) and everything will be ok! good luck!

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

Thanks so much, everyone. I am 37 weeks today and hanging in there. The babies' weights are estimated at 6lbs 10oz and 7lbs 3oz. I know the estimates were way off with DS #1, so who knows. I can't wait to meet them!

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

That is great news! I had DD at 37 weeks and she weighted 6 lbs 6 oz and was perfectly healthy. Natural birth, water broke, etc. We left in 2 days, though she did end up getting jaundice after she was home, but that is common with early babies, and it didn't take long to get rid of it!

You are doing awesome!Chat Icon

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

Thanks for sharing your experiences and for the encouragement. It is wonderful to hear that even if babies had to go to the NICU, they are doing well!

I cannot believe it... I will be 38 weeks on Easter Sunday. I have a feeling I will make it to my scheduled c-section on Thursday. One never knows, though.... my water broke on Easter Sunday when I had DS #1 (on 3/23/08... maybe I'll have more "Easter Bunnies").

Re: 36 weeks...and have some questions

i had my shot at 28 weeks and my twins were born at 34w and 4days... they were fine they were in the nicu for only a week and came home, biggest issue is they keep them in incubators until their lungs develop a little and they gain weight... which can happen smoothly in a few short days... dont worry! ur past what i was and mine are happy as ever, 2 months old.
