If you make your own baby food, squash question
My daughter just started feeding my granddaughter sweet potatoes. Next is carrots then squash. Do you use fresh squash or could you use frozen squash? Nothing is added to the frozen squash. She would put it in the blender with a little formula to smooth it out. Just wanted to know if the frozen is ok. It's already pureed. This squash that she saw is already cooked & pureed.

As long as the ingredients say just squash I don't think there is anything wrong with frozen. It should be fine.

I have used the frozen organic squash. I steamed it and then blended it.

I did both. I probably started out fresh and then went to frozen. Fresh squash is really hard to peel. I steamed the frozen stuff and then pureed it.
Also I found that peeling the squash and steaming it took so long and was really hard. I loved using the Beaba for everything but, with squash it was much easier to slice it half, put it in a pan with some water and roast it (covered in foil). Then the skin slipped off and I pureed it.

frozen organic pureed squash is great - I used it all the time - and it's very smooth so I'd just heat it up.

I also roasted the squash in the oven. Check out wholesomebabyfood.com for recipes and tips. It came out great!

Its fine, but you can not freeze it again.
If you cook it you can refreze it. Here is infor from wholesomebabyfood.com "YES. You can refreeze frozen veggies & fruits. Using frozen fruits and vegetables is the second best option to using fresh foods. The process of flash-freezing (foods being frozen at a very low temperature and frozen very quickly) actually preserves and allows for optimal nutrient retention. One of the most commonly asked question is "Can I safely use frozen vegetables or fruits to make baby food purees and refreeze them?". There are no studies or research to show that refreezing is negative and/or may adversely affect health. The caveat is that you must cook the foods prior to refreezing them. Frozen vegetables and fruits are NOT COOKED prior to being frozen.
Picked at the peak of freshness, a vast majority of frozen veggies are flash frozen either right in the fields or in the warehouse close by. "Fresh" veggies may sit around in trucks and warehouses and criss-cross the country before it even makes it to your table. Frozen veggies are NOT cooked when packaged and so they must be cooked prior to eating. Please be sure to read the label of your frozen veggie bags as some brands of frozen veggies do come pre-cooked. You would not want to refreeze these.
The fact is, cooking foods deplete more nutrients than does freezing foods. Contrary to myth, Freezing foods (fruits and vegetables in particular) does NOT deplete 100% of that food's vitamins and minerals. The process of freezing, if kept at a constant 0 degree temp does not contribute to a TOTAL loss of nutrients - if it did, then the majority of the population would be malnourished as we rely on and eat a large amount of frozen foods.
If you ever forget what the "rule" is, remember this example : you can take out a roast that was frozen uncooked & raw, thaw it, cook it and then freeze the leftovers for another meal. Once you have thawed the leftovers, you should never re-freeze the leftover-leftovers. "

Re: If you make your own baby food, squash question
Food safety guidelines say otherwise. I would go with Food service guidelines over any baby website.

actually, the PP is correct ... so is the baby food website.
this is from the USDA : Refreezing Once food is thawed in the refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze it without cooking, although there may be a loss of quality due to the moisture lost through thawing. After cooking raw foods which were previously frozen, it is safe to freeze the cooked foods. If previously cooked foods are thawed in the refrigerator, you may refreeze the unused portion. Freeze leftovers within 3-4 days. Do not refreeze any foods left outside the refrigerator longer than 2 hours; 1 hour in temperatures above 90 °F.
If you purchase previously frozen meat, poultry or fish at a retail store, you can refreeze if it has been handled properly.
