Re: Would you sign a health care proxy-type doc for your ILs for a WEEKEND?
My parents have one for DS bc my mom watches him. God forbid Im just in a meeting at work, and miss a phone call, and a life or death decision needs to be made, I wouldnt want it put off bc they couldnt get a hold of us. I trust my parents judgement 110% and I know they would do what was best for my son, so yes, if in the event there is a major emergency and I cant be reached, they are the final say.

I would never sign that and it would make me uncomfortable enough to cnx my trip and stay home. I get being prepared for the worst, but this is way over kill IMHO.
Same here. It would be so overwhelming for me I would just cancel the trip.

I believe you can just write something saying, please treat my child in teh case of an emergency and immediately notify me to make any and all decisions
This is what I would do....not what your ILs are asking.

I really think it's the notary part that's throwing me off --- as if I think one of my ILs might decide something crazy for DCs health --- I know they're doing this out of love and concern for their grandchildren -- I just think it's too much and can't wrap my head around it.

I agree....it's just unnecessary and kinda scary. What exactly do they think is going to happen while they are babysitting? You might want to re-think your decision if they don't think they can handle it
Seriously, they have raised children...they have to know this is excessive. If, God-forbid, something were to happen I would think a hospital would care for a child brought in regardless of that paper...you are a phone call away and can authorize any care.

Is it a health care proxy you are talking about? A proxy does not need a notary........is your fil a lawyer?

Maybe I just don't know too much about this but, no, I would absolutely never sign this.. If something were to god forbid happened, once they took the kids to the hospital, I would want to be called and I would want to make all the decisions. I would not give anyone else the right to make life or death decisions for my children. And, to be honest, I would be beyond disturbed if my IL's sent this to me. WHY would they need this document? You will be at a wedding, reachable and within driving distance - not Iraq - it just does not make sense to me why you cannot still be the one to make decisions for your child
ITA. I find it very odd and disturbing, and extremely overboard. I would not sign it and would have a long discussion about this.

Re: Would you sign a health care proxy-type doc for your ILs for a WEEKEND?
in my experience, i've never signed one for my mom. She has brought my older DD to the dr and the hospital. The dr's office just treats her and so did the hospital, if it was something life threatening they would have called me anyways. But honestly, i'm in contact with my mom so i know what is going on and know before they are at the dr or hospital.
I went away for almost a month for work and my mom had my DD and i never signed one. When i was away everyone knew if my phone went off and i walked out, it was because it was something to do with my DD and they were understanding.

Re: Would you sign a health care proxy-type doc for your ILs for a WEEKEND?
I would never sign a health care proxy form for my child. I want to be the one to make all decisions. I would sign a form authorizing them to take my child to a specific hospital of my choice for treatment. For any medical decisions that can be made, contact me. I can always be reached.

If you think one of your ILs might decide something crazy for DCs health, they probably shouldn't be watching them for the weekend.

Our form in the kid's files at our doctor's office. They had us do one before their first appointment. Basically it lists my brother, sister and mother as people who can make health care decisions in case I am not there. This way if they are watching my kids, even for the afternoon and had to rush them to the hospital or something, the doctor can see them right away.
we have the same type thing filed out at our dr.s office. i listed a people who can if in case of emergency make decisions. People who are listed are MIL, babysitter and aunt. They already have her insurance information and they are affiliated with the hospital that in case of emergency would be going to.
