Re: Who do you address wedding checks to???

Writing "Cash" always makes me nervous. I write it out to the Mr. & Mrs. New Last Name. It was exciting for me to see my new last name, especially on checks. Chat Icon

ETA: And geez, people get annoyed over everything. You don't like my $300 check made out to the new Mr & Mrs? That's fine, don't bother cashing it then! Chat Icon

The person I know. So if it's the bride, I put her name.

I don't put Mr and Mrs. Most couples don't have a bank account together just yet and they would have to be both present to deposit the check. NOT practical for them!

Not true! Just need signatures of both on the back. Chat Icon

In the brides name. So she can open up a checking account in her own name and stash that money just incase something bad happens in that marriage. I'm just saying Chat Icon

Re: Who do you address wedding checks to???

We got all different types - cash, DH's name, my name and also Mr. & Mrs. ____. I would address it as Mr. & Mrs. _____. I loved seeing my new last name on a bunch of checks. Chat Icon

Only one person has to sign the back, you dont need 2 signatures. All the checks we got for our wedding were made out to Mr and Mrs and on our anniversaries we get checks made out to mr and mrs from family and we have never had to both sign the back.

I have found this to be completely random based on the branch I go to, or day of the year or something. I have been told DH needed to sign it, then other tellers have told me it was fine with just mine (and this is with a check with both names into an account with both names on it.Chat Icon Chat Icon )

With regards to the quastion at hand, I usually write it out to Mr. & Mrs. Last name (if I know she is taking his name) otherwise probably His full name & Her full name.

When I got married, we had checks written to everything - my name, his name, Mr & Mrs his last name, Mr & Mrs. his MIDDLE name evenChat Icon and when I went to deposit them (into an account in only my name) they told me to write the account number on the back, no signature at all and "for deposit only." They all went through.

Re: Who do you address wedding checks to???

CASH

We do this because for several reasons. #1 being they will be able to cash it right away. #2 not every woman legally changes her last name to her DH's.

I ALWAYS write it to Mr. & Mrs. - I feel like it makes it more personal.

Me too. I guess I am more "old fashioned" than most!

I guess i am too!

Me too! Almost all of our checks were written out to both of us, and we had no problems. We had a joint checking account with my maiden name, and I brought my marriage license to show the proof of my name change.

I kind of liked signing the checks together. Chat Icon

I use "or"... that way they can put it into either of their accounts.

Seriously!

I am all for women doing what they want. Keep your name if that suits you but lets keep in mind--all our lastnames were passed down from a man. Sorry it jusy irks me when people who keep their lastname look down on those who decide to change. Where did your lastname come from? Your dad, granddad etc.

Re: Who do you address wedding checks to???

The grooms name.

It was no fun having to sign every check twice. It was cute when people wrote the check out to Mr. & Mrs., but looking back I would much rather have spent half the time getting the checks deposited. The novelty of Mr & Mrs wore off after like the 10th check anyway.

ETA - I appreciated all gifts equally. I didn't complain about having to sign every check twice (which I guess I had to do since I didn't have my marriage license at the time).

Also, even if I didn't take DH's last name, I would still be Mrs. DH's full name, since I am his wife. So I don't know why women would be offened by that. Seems silly.

Actually, you're right. One teller told us both names, another teller on another day (same branch!) told us just my signature was fine. We just both signed the back of each check to be safe. I complain about a LOT of things, but signing checks that are made out to me will never be one of them. Chat Icon

The only thing with writing it out to Cash is that if, god forbid, someone else was to get their hands on the card they could easily cash it for themselves. Obviously if it's written out to someone they wouldn't be able to. I know it's a far fetched idea but you never know...

not far fetched at all.. happened to me
i had several envelopes that were lost at my wedding and the checks were made out to cash. i felt so bad because the person giving the gift lost out as well!

I always write either both the new married name, or just the person i'm close to if i don't know the other person well enough.

I totally don't look down on people who changed their names, but this isn't always the case. My last name is my mom's last name, and my DH also uses his mom's last name. Yes, they originally were passed down from our grandpas, but even so, just because the past was one way doesn't mean that the present has to be that way, too.

I write both their names but I use the bride's maiden name. That is, "to Jane Smith and John Doe".

That way, they both sign and can deposit it in either their own pre-existing individual account, or one that they create together.

I do Mr & Mrs...guess I'm old fashioned also! DH and I both signed all checks no matter how they were written out. My bank understands that if you just got married, you don't have the certificate yet and aren't ready to change the name on your account yet (if you do it at all).

Re: Who do you address wedding checks to???

honestly, AFTER I GOT MARRIED, I started addressing them to the person I'm related to or friendlier with. Either that or "CASH"

It was SUCH A PIA to cash the checks that had DH's name & mine on them b/c we had separate checking accounts at different banks & had to BOTH be present to cash them

Re: Who do you address wedding checks to???

I've always made them out to "Mr. & Mrs" and didn't have an issue depositing a single one of our wedding checks, despite the fact that our account was not joint at the time and was still in my maiden name. But now that I see all the problems some ppl have had depositing checks like this I might rethink it in the future!

I would never write a check to cash or give cash. I've heard too many stories of envelopes disappearing to do this.

I completely agree. Depends on the branch or the person you get. We had issues deposting checks in both our names because I wasn't allowed to use my name til all legal documents were required. I made sure my passport stayed in my maiden name so I could go on my honeymoon, but checks waited til we got back. Typically, no biggie. BUT BOTH OF US HAD TO GO TO THE BANK to sign the checks. They had to wait til we were both there. (TYpically not a big deal, except we both work 24 hour job and rotate our shifts around one another.)

Checks made out to CASH are bad!!!!!!! Many can get stolen!!!!!!!
