OB in Manhattan
Hi ladies, I just went to my appointment this morning and she measured me at about 6 weeks ! I'm thrilled but she doesn't deliver and recommended me to two doctors that don't take my insurance. So I'm back to square one and nervous about it. I'd like to deliver near my apartment because I can't bear to think about the LIE with a three day old Does anyone know any good doctors in Manhattan? I can call them and ask if they take my insurance.
Thanks ladies

Re: OB in Manhattan
I am a paitent of Dr. Waterstone at Weill Cornell Medical Associates- 201 E 80th Street 212.746.7300.
If you're on the West Side, the office is 12 W 72d Street 646.962.7800
I am having an internal debate about whether or not to stay with this practice and deliver at Cornell...only because I REALLY want a natural, drug free birth. If you're interested in a conventional hospital birth then I WHOLE HEARTEDLY recommend this office. Appointments run like clockwork, the online system allows you to receive test results electronically and access to email the doctor. Their electronic records system ensure coordinated care once you deliver at Cornell Hospital (or Columbia on the West Side) and if you choose you can also have an internist and pediatrician at this same offie.
GOOD LUCK!

i go here too but dr. weiss is my OB. she doesn't deliver, so one of the others in the practice will. it doesn't bother me b/c i LOVE dr. weiss. I've met with 2 of the others and they are fine... I honestly don't care who does the actual deliver.
I'm confused though - why can't you stay with them and have a drug free birth?

I have yet to read anything reassuring about Cornell Hospital and drug free birth...I have read quite the opposite, that natural births are a "battle". Cornell is arguably the best hospital in the city but they are a business and have their way of doing things. I've been told by nurses that "excessively long labors" (sometimes 5-6 hours) are often pushed towards C-Section. Which may explain why the hospital has the highest c-section rate in the city, I understand that this can also be attributed to high risk pregnancies but I don't fully buy that. Mt. Sinai has a top NICU and yet their c-section rate is under 30% whereas Cornell Weill is over 40%.
Cornell does not permit intermittent monitoring, which means that you will be limited as to your movements, I'm not sure if birthing bars are available in every room, I believe birthing balls are allowed. Not every room has a shower and none have bathtubs.
The last statistic which I find GLARING about Cornell is their rate of episotomy- 28.2% as compared to 8.1% St. Lukes, 2.5% Bellvue, 16.6% metropolitan, 20.2% NYU, 10% Columbia and 24.5% Lenox Hill (all 2010 statistics).
I'm not trying to scare you, just urge everyone to do their research. That being said, I understand that birth is not always what we "plan" for it to be and I'm flexilble to whatever is best for my baby. I'm just dumbfounded by how difficult it is in NYC to have a natural drug free birth. I respect a woman's right to choose....why should that only apply to abortion?!
I plan on having a discussion with Dr. Waterstone about this next appt. and then will decide whether to switch practices. Despite my concerns, I am confident that Cornell will do their best to deliver a healthy baby...whether they will respect my choices is a separate matter.

Re: OB in Manhattan
thanks for the info. I hadn't done any research on this - I don't plan to go drug free but i really do NOT want a C section. I had no idea their C sec rate was so high... I will ask Dr Weiss at my next appointment.

I think you have to take all statistics with a grain of salt: Cornell has and has had for a long time a very active high risk pregnancy unit with lots of very old mothers and lots of multiple mothers due to it's very excellent RE department. Due to this, they do more invasive monitoring and will, of course, have higher CS rates.
Epidural rates at Cornell & Sinai are the same. I can't speak about episiotomy rates, some MDs think it's good for the woman to tear herself... there is controversy about the healing process vs the fact that an uncontrolled tear can extend more than a controlled episiotomy... so it is your OB's choice.
It's just not true about them considering 5-6 hours a long labor. I don't know who told you this, but they are wrong.
If you really want an all natural experience, the best place to go would be a community hospital in the suburbs or St Luke's Roosevelt.
That being said, if I delivered in NYC, I would deliver at Cornell, and I would use: Dr Dobrenis Dr Jin Dr Leonard

Re: OB in Manhattan
I had my DD last June at Cornell. My doctor was Robin Kalish. I had a really great experience with both the doctor and hospital.
At the time, I also asked about the high rate of C-section and they told me it was mostly attributed to the number of high risk pregnancies that get delivered at that hospital.
I had a natural birth (with an epidural). When the time came, my DD was a bit stubborn to come out so they gave me two options - c-section or vacuum-assisted birth. I chose the latter and everything worked out great. There was absolutely no pressure for the c-section. I have also had several other friends deliver at Cornell; all natural.
If I still lived in NYC, I would stick with the doctor and the hospital but I'm out on LI now so will deliver locally.

Thanks for the information on episiotomy, I will definitely ask about this. SLR seems like the obvious choice for what I'm looking for but God forbid an emergency...Cornell or Mt. Sinai are the hospitals I'm most comfortable in.

Re: OB in Manhattan
Thank you all so much! I'm humbled by how helpful everyone is!
I definitely want to have a natural birth, would LOVE to have the baby in a tub with a doula (because I saw 'The Business of Being Born), and want to be able to walk around during labor. This however might not be feasible due to our insurance plan.
I don't want a c-section AT ALL and my mother is continually telling me to stop saying it because if it has to happen it has to happen (I told her to watch the movie!)
We're in Murray Hill and it would be awesome to stay near NYU but I wouldn't mind going up to Lenox Hill and/or Cornell but I'm apprehensive about the rates you all described.
Anyone have GHI? I'm going to call these doctors tomorrow. Thanks, ladies!

As far as I know the only hospital in city with a waterbirthing unit is St. Luke's Roosevelt. I would focus your search there for OBs if a water birth in a hospital setting is your goal. St. Luke's Roosevelt Birthing Center

Definitely check out St Luke's Roosevelt. Also keep an open mind about everything. I had really hoped to deliver in the Birthing Center at SLR (which looked awesome!) but unfortunately ended up with a c-section. It's been really hard for me to deal with the aftermath b/c I had my heart so set on a natural drug free birth and it didn't work out that way. I'd hate for someone else to go through this so just keep in mind that anything can happen and you can't really control labor. Good luck!
