Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
When we were younger Fh and I both wanted t live in Manhattan, but then I went to school on LI and after college he moved to LI. We're both so attached to our cars and closet space. but it would make it soooo much closer to work, it's ridiculous.
Can anyone share any pros and cons?

I never did but always wanted to...just for a short time...maybe 6 months or so!
I would love to feel what a short commute was...be able to just walk dpwnstairs and have a bunch of resturants/bars right there!

Yeah, we were thinking short term, like 3-5 years and then move to the boros or the burbs when we have kids, but for now while we're focused on careers, to experience manhattan

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I lived in the city for 8 years-- right after college and up until last Fall when we bought our place in Hoboken.
I loved living here-- and miss it- even though I am still in a city, it's not quite the same. Bit eventually, you want more space, a place to park a car and you want a little more trees and grass.
If I was still single- I would definitely still be living here-- and if it was more affordable to have normal creature comforts, we would have maybe looked to buy here as well.

I considered it for awhile, but I stayed in the city a lot when I was doing event coordinating so I practically lived there.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
When I moved back here for school, I so badly wanted to live in Manhattan, because I was attending school there (not far from where you are working ) I didn't because of one main reason - the cost. It was just too expensive for me, even with the cost of commuting.
I did live in another city for a long time and the things I loved about it were the convenience of having lots of things I could walk to, and that stores and other things stayed open later in the evening than in the suburbs. I actually didn't mind living without the car - a bus pass (metrocard here) would get me most places and I could always rent a car if I wanted to take a trip or get away for the weekend.

I did a house watch in the village for 4 months when I was 16. I loved it. I'd move here in a heartbeat if a0 I could afford to live in that same neighborhood & b) if I could convince DH. Yeah number 1 is actually the easier of the 2

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I lived in nyc for about 4 years. i lived on the upper east side and it was a great area. i loved the experience. I never had a car there but my sister did and parking was a pain, garages can be really expensive. I took cabs, subways and buses everywhere. Sometimes I miss the city but I am happy with my new life out here on LI too!

DH lived on the UES all while we dated, on 77th and 3rd and loved it. He still works there, but we live here. We do toy with moving there in a few years. Who knows? I know he misses it...and all his buds are there.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I live in the city now, but DH and I are selling our apt to move to NJ. We will be commuting in to the city for our jobs. I am a bit nervous about moving out of the city b/c of the convienence of everything, but we really want more SPACE and that is what I am excited about. That, and a place for my dog to play outside.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
Well, where I live now, in Queens, it's sort of in the middle. I live in a slightly mroe urban area of queens. It's HARD to park a car, but it's doable. I'm a block from the subway, and most things are open late. I have everything in walking distance. A duane reade on the corner, 2 pizzerias within 2 blocks, a 24 hour grocery, a 24 hour fruit market, several regular gorcery stores, gyms, etc. Everything really close by. So I wouldn't be gaining much in that area, and the restaruants all over wouldn't do much for me because they'd be expensive, but being SOOO close to work would be amazing. Right now we're both workign in midtown. We were also thinking on long Island city where they are building gorgeous condos and co-ops and it looks like they're going to clean it up and it'll be the next Hoboken, but what if they don't...I could end up sharing my sidewalk with hookers..lol I don't know. Thoughts?

I lived in NYC for 2 years, and San Francisco for 5. Loved it at the time, but I couldn't do it again now.

hell I don't live in Manhattan but live in queens where it's so easy to get too.
Manhattan is great but way too expensive.
we rent a two bedroom apartment with backyard and we pay 1100.
we would probably be paying that for a studio in Manhattan.

Prediction- LIC is going to be or already is the next "up and coming" area. I have a friend who is living there and it is probably worth looking into.
ETA: I lived in San Francisco too

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
DH and I were born, raised, and reside in Brooklyn now. We never wanted a "house" of our own, so we're currently saving up to hopefully buy something in Manhattan (condo/coop) or something along those lines.

I agree, I used to work in that area and it's only like 10 minutes from Manhattan.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I would move to Manhattan in a second if we could afford it. Four years ago my DH wouldn't even consider it....it was a struggle to get him to move to Forest Hills! But just the other day we were walking somewhere around 52nd on the west side and I asked him if he would want to live here. I couldn't believe it when he didn't immediately say no!
Even though I would love to live there, he is definitely attached to his car, and we barely have enough room in our one bedroom as it is. I can't see us having enough space there.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I have lived in Manhattan for the past 7years. I lived in the Times Square area (49th between 6th and 7th) for 3yrs., Harlem for 1yr. and we bought a co-op in Washington Heights 3 yrs ago. I love living in the city. As someone said it is great to walk out of your place and have so much stuff right there!! It is nice to just hop on the train and have a short ride to get to work and auditions. If we want to get out of the city for the weekend we just rent a car. The negatives are that I don't want to raise a child in the city, but when that time arrives we will move. Depending on where you live there can be a lot of noise pollution and you dont get a lot of space for your money.

Re: Has anyone ever lived in or considered living in Manhattan?
I don't know how to adjust to not having a car. When I was in HS I said I would never have a car, there's no point, cause you can take the subway everywehre, and I did. But now we both have cars and we both love our cars. And I'd imagine it make grocery shopping a whole different thing, you can't buy a lot at once and forget about costco.
Maybe LIC would be a happy medium.
My cousin lives in hoboken and she loves it. she just bought a condo there. i like hoboken, it has a lot of charm, but one advantage to LIC over hoboken, if we stay there when we ahve kids is that it'll be NYC schools, not jersey schools.

I was gonna say, where do you live, and if you move, can we have your apt?
FH pays $1000 for a BASEMENT..in a town with no LIRR station...but we get use of the yard, because the 1st floor people ahve always been nice as long as we've been there (this is the 3rd set of people), and the landlord is absentee in every sense of the word. he does NOTHING but he doens't bother us either
