Cert ?
I am already a certified teacher, but when I got my transcripts evaluated for SWD, they said I still needed classes for students grades 5 - 9. Does anybody know if these can be any random classes in this age group or does it have to be this age group AND special ed? There is a class offered through NYSUT (Teaching Middle Level Math) that I want to take, with registration ending today, but I'm not sure if it will count for SWD. When I called Boces, they said as long as it was grade level appropriate, however when I emailed Boces, they said that is a math class... So what would you do?? Take it, hoping it counts, since it will be less stressful in summer or take it next time when I work two FT jobs, have a new baby, etc... Thanks!

Re: Cert ?
I just went through a similar situation at Dowling College. I am a NYS certified Spanish teacher and went back, this year, for my SWD certification as well as my 5/6 extension. The way I understood it, is that I take the 5/6 class and then call BOCES and if I pay $100 dollars, I''m certified to teach Spanish 5-12. If I pay another $100 dollars, I'm certified to teach SWD 5-12. Unfortunately, the day I called BOCES to let them know I completed the class, the certification office was closed and I haven't had a chance to call back.
The class that I took at Dowling was specifically for grades 5-9. It was class 5103 titled "Middle School and the Middle School Child."
I hope this helps! Feel free to FM if you have further questions
