eliminating gluten dairy & sugar

I have a medical condition that according to research can be improved by PRETTY MUCH STARVING YOURSELF!

Have you eliminiated gluten, dairy & sugar? I barely eat dairy now. I have a pretty serious sugar additction though. I wonder if I should see a nutritionist but my insurance wont cover one unless I'm diabetic (which Im not). Advice, support? TIA Chat Icon

It will feel as if your diet is so limited, but rest assured that there are plenty of supermarkets with aisles now for gluten and vegan selections. Wild by Nature, Whole Foods, and Trader Joes all carry foods that you will find that are friendly.

Also, you may find some recipes online for your new diet/lifestyle. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have recently eliminated all grains and sugar, but still eat some dairy. Sugar was hard but after cutting it out completely, after a few days the cravings were gone. I'm probably going to eventually eliminate dairy too. Look on some paleo diet websites for food ideas because it's all grain-free, so it's gluten free, and also dairy free. I think sugar, too.

Good luck!

I can't eat gluten or eggs. You will be fine -- I still go out to restaurants (there are plenty of GF options on LI), etc. I am sitting here right now eating chocolate cake, all entirely GF and vegan.

HOWEVER -- I would see a doctor before changing your eating habits so greatly. I wouldn't voluntarily be gluten and egg free if there were some other option for me.

I have had to go gluten free and vegan because of allergies. It is hard sometimes because I am a huge dairy fan but I feel so much better now. I ate a little dairy and egg yesterday and today I feel like junk. I shop a lot at Whole Foods and Trader Joes. If I can do anything to help you let me know.

I would consult with your doctor before you make the decision to radically change your diet. I had to recently give up wheat due to a sensitivity and it was challenging at first but I do not miss it too much now 3 months later. I find that most of the gluten free bread products are terrible the texture is off. I have found quinoa and corn flour pasta that is really good. I am extremely picky though. It is almost impossible to eliminate all sugar from your diet- Do you mean added sugar or would you eliminate fruit as well?
If you do decide to do this elimination diet I would focus on eliminating one thing at a time. Also keep in mind that many of the alternative food may have ingredients in them that you body is not use to especially gluten free products and this may take awhile for you body to adjust to. I found that many of the flour used as a wheat substitute did not agree with my GI tract.
As a scientist I just want to point out that the source of your research is VERY important make sure it is from peer reviewed articles (pubmed is your best source) the internet is FULL of bad advice and I have heard some horror stories about great disease cures gone bad. Good Luck!

OMG yes, yes, yes. I can't echo this enough!!!

I had to do an elimination diet with DD2 when I was bf'ing her. I had to, overnight, eliminate: Eggs, dairy, wheat, oats, barley, peanuts, tree nuts, soy. Fish and shellfish I already eliminate for my own allergies. It was expensive, difficult to maintain, hard to plan, boring, difficult to shop for too. It was too much to do at once. Prior to testing her they had me only eliminating dairy and that I was doing OK with.

Good luck, hope it works for you :)

Actually the main thing I'd like to eliminate is gluten. According to research, it CAN help, but its not for everyone. I have spoken to my doc about it and he says to do it if i want to- he didnt seem too concerned.

Over the weekend, I ate pizza and pasta (which i practically NEVER do) as a last hurrah and now I'm afraid to give it up for good!

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions Chat Icon

So many pizza places and restaurants have gluten free pizza and pasta now. I gave up gluten two months ago and really the only thing I miss a little is italian bread. There are so many good gluten free products out there now.
