Anyone do a gluten free dairy free diet?
Looking to start and am overwhelmed. I am looking for as much feedback and product recommendations as I can get. I already got a lot of advice and have been reading like a madwoman so I've learned quite a bit already but it's still overwhelming, esp when some of the food tastes like crud. I would love to know which products are most tried and true so it meets with less resistance, KWIM?
Any advice is welcome.
TIA

i just wanted to say to look into health food stores (i'm thinking specifically of sherry's by the babylon train station, but others work too) as they usually have a larger selection and can offer you advice as to what's best (tastier, etc.)

Re: Anyone do a gluten free dairy free diet?
I did it for DS for awhile due to his wheat sensitivity (I only knew about this because of an allergy bloodtest). It didn't seem to affect DS one way or another, so we switched back and he's been fine on wheat/gluten products.
I did learn a lot about it though and can tell you the places I shopped. I shopped a lot at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Fairway. Whole Foods and Fairway have aisles devoted to gluten free diets. They also have a lot in the way of frozen foods. You'll find that more and more supermarkets carry gluten free foods now, even the mainstream ones. And there's a a lot of food that tastes pretty good. For kids, Ians (frozen foods) makes some pretty yummy gluten free foods - even chicken nuggets and french toast sticks. 2 local bakeries by me carry gluten free cookies, etc. There's also an Italian restaurant in Wantagh on Jerusalem Avenue that makes gluten free dishes and pizza.
So it's a lot easier to do now than even a few years ago. HTH!

Christopher is on it. We also give other supplements as well. We also give a probiotic, and the diet has helped with his bowel movements and he no longer has that bloated belly. We shop at Trader Joes, Wild By Nature, and there is a store in Ronkonkoma, called the Diet Shop, they only sell Gluten Free products.

Re: Anyone do a gluten free dairy free diet?
We have a family member who eats gluten free and as others have mentioned, she shops a lot at Whole Foods and Fairway. Trader Joes has handouts at the front of the store that tell you all the products they sell that are gluten free, or free of other allergens.
I don't know about dairy free, but Sweet Karma bakery in East Meadow sells gluten free baked goods that really look good.

Re: Anyone do a gluten free dairy free diet?
My son has been on it since Nov. I thought it was going to be so hard but really it wasn't. He's a big snack kid so taking Doritos away I really just thought would be a nightmare but he can still have Lays chips so he was fine. (Tositios also) There's still lots they can eat, fruits, veggies, meats etc. The stores I agree are hard to get to if you don't live close by but Stop and Shop has some things which is great. If you need any food info let me know, I have a bunch of stuff on it

Stop and Shop in West Islip has a huge Gluten Free section. Also, try Dr. B Well Naturally on Manetto Hill Road in Plainview.

Re: Anyone do a gluten free dairy free diet?
DH is on gluten-free/dairy-free diet at the suggestion of his nutritionist. It's not as hard as it initially seems -- we've adjusted as a family (I'm dairy-free b/c youngest DS is still BF and is sensitive to dairy proteins).
We eat a LOT of rice and quinoa, fresh veggies, rice noodles, lean proteins, etc. The worst meal is bfast, due to the butter that's in most bfast foods.
For us, it didn't pay to find substitutes because we found the taste to be awful. Simply going without turned out to be better for us...

Re: Anyone do a gluten free dairy free diet?
Thank you for all the suggestions. I think the hardest part is finding the substitutions for the usual stuff in his diet like bread, ice cream, yogurt and such. But I am welcome to suggestions. A friend told me Ricera (sp?) is really yummy yogurt sub and Rice Dream is an ice cream sub.
For those who do it, does your entire family do the same diet? Also, do you give Calcium supplements? My son drinks almond milk now and really like its.
