goody bags - what you like vs. what your DC likes
i like edible items (once they are eaten, they are gone)
DS loves the little things (spinning tops, glowing rings, ect)

I like edible treats. I don't need more clutter.
I am doing DS's good bags I put in
1) Fruit Roll Up 2) Car shaped Pretzels 3) Smarties 4) Rice Krispie Treat
I try to stay away from candy.

I hate, loathe and despise any Oriental Trading type junk. Just more tiny pieces of clutter to throw away after a day or two when the novelty wears off

My kid loves stuff, so I like anything that makes him smile....he actually plays with all the plastic tops and kazoos!
'I' prefer something edible or a coloring book..

I am all for edible. If I get one more pencil, I will be able to build my kids a treehouse out of all the ones they've gotten so far!

I would rather give(and get) one favor. Not a goody bag. Like a book, a coloring book, personalized cup or bowl etc.

We did popsicle makers that they were selling at Party City. Each one cost 2.99 and they actually work! Everyone loved the idea too because it was something useful. We had an ice skating party so I made a little tag that said "thank you for coming. We hope you had an "ice" time." Here is a link for what we bought: popsicle maker

Re: goody bags - what you like vs. what your DC likes
edible is a good route, i throw those little toys aways ASAP and DS usually plays with them for 5 minutes. I did chocolate dipped pretzels - which were really easy to make and everyone loved or I let DS pick some treats from to stuff in a bag (lollipops, bags of pretzels, rice krispy treats, ect.)
i have also put coupons for a free game of bowling or a free cone from friendlys

These are a really great idea! My little guy would love this! My kids have gotten a million bags of junk and they love them! After 1-2 days I throw them in a draw and then when Halloween comes around I dump all of them into one huge bowl and stick them out my front door for the trick or treaters!

Re: goody bags - what you like vs. what your DC likes
I usually like the pure edible bags. Less clutter in the house. For DS's last b-day, we had edible stuff, and a Matchbox car (the party was at a go-kart track, so it was a racing car theme...). I figure the Matchbox car is pretty cheap, but it's still a quality toy.

Well I agree with above. I usually try to do practical stuff. Last year a personalized water bottle, this year a sand bucket filled with bubbles, sidewalk chalk, a jump rope, fruit snacks, and a ring pop. Still stuff that gets thrown out but maybe a little more use since its summer.

typically 3 nicer things instead of a bunch of crap- like for girls a nice headband or hair clip, an accessory (like those big gem rings), bracelets, change purse, etc.

Re: goody bags - what you like vs. what your DC likes
I hate them but DS loves them so every year I find myself getting little stuff when making his goody bags (my fault.... I ask him what he wants on them)

Re: goody bags - what you like vs. what your DC likes
I hate the dollar store crap you get in a goody bag. Half the crap doesn't even work, and I always feel bad throwing it in the garbage- knowing the parent spent good money on it. This year for DS bday party, I went to 5 below and bought Super Soaker water guns for $5 and gave those out to his guests. It was a big hit! I would have spent that much or more filling a bag full of crap. Trying to figure out what to do for DD's bday in 2 weeks. If only people would freaking RSVP.....

Re: goody bags - what you like vs. what your DC likes
I may be in the minority, but if it's edible, I throw it out. The little things he gets, he plays with for a day or two, it breaks and then I throw it out. In the past I've given coloring/activity books and little packs of crayons. When he has received things like that, I throw them in my bag for when we go out to eat or anywhere else where we may have to entertain him.
