Re: Laffer - more details from NYTimes
I agree that something seems off with the wife.
I didn't post last night, but read some of the threads from the LIW site that were found.
It seemed like this woman had more going on than just an addiction to pain meds.
She comes off to me as if she had some kind of mental/developmental/cognitive disability PRE all of this.
Who knows what this guy did to her too during the years they were together.
She may have already had some kind of serious brain damage.
How long does it take a case like this to go to trial? This is going to be like the Casey Anthony trial for our area!

I agree with no bail. I think he's a flight risk and that bail on a case like this would have been ridiculous.
However we feel about the bruises on his face, I do think that there is a risk of a police brutality allegation. I think that risk increases if, for any reason, this is not the guy (though I realize they have the right guy).
The wife cooperating does not sit right with me. The way she spoke during her perp walk was a bit weird. She wants to hide some part of her own involvement, perhaps her part in planning. Maybe it's the lawyer in me but she should have said nothing then but she could still have cooperated at police HQ. What is she, like thinking about a book deal already? Something is fishy and more than the usual something fishy. I can't put my finger on it.
As much as I think that these 2 are slime, I still do not like the perp walks, where they parade defendants for the media. In a case like this, find a way to let the families spit at these people but I still hate the parading for the press. Robert Gottlieb is a well known lawyer who wants to put an end to the media display of the perp walk and I have to agree. It's more common in NY than anywhere else. It's considered prejudicial for a defendant to be arraigned in handcuffs but the police can parade them around in handcuffs. They actually tip off the media as to where the person will be and when so it is not just a matter of having to transport someone.
And believe me, I am really not taking a liberal stance on this case. Let this guy FRY but do it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDITED: This is such a sad time for Long Island. This is the biggest massace on LI since Clin Ferguson opened fire on the Long Island Rail Road. I still remember that day, what a tragedy it was. I cannot pass Merillon Avenue without thinking of it.
So, what gives me the right to comment on my blog about this awful recent case? For one, I'm a lawyer and I have a blog and I get to decide what to post. I started my studies with the intention of becoming a prosecutor. I had two law school internships in prosecutor's offices. I have maintained friendships with criminal attorney friends from both sides of the courtroom. When a big case comes up, I like to cut through the media garbage and find commentary from scholarly and experienced criminal lawyers and I think I have learned a lot over the years from doing that.
I may change my mind as I consider more aspects of the case. I keep an open mind! Below are my "notes."

EDITED: reports now say that the defendant grabbed one of his weapons during the arrest. I knew I'd have to change my stance as I got new info. I'm not sure there was any brutality as there was a risk to the lives of the officers.

He allegedly went to grab a police officers weapon during his arrest...hence the resisting arrest facial he received.

He is a sick, sick man. I can't even imagine being one of the victim's families. All for drugs. Really?

Re: Laffer - more details from NYTimes
I hate reading this. Pharmacists are told to give them anything they want if they are held up - I worked in a pharmacy for three years and I was never in a situation like that, thank god, but the Pharmacist I worked for told me a few stories of being held up and just giving the guy whatever he wanted. One particular time, she didn't even know if he had a gun - she could tell he had an object, but she didn't know if it was a real gun or not. You just can't take a risk.
She was friends with this pharmacist that was killed... She went to his funeral today. She sounded devastated when I spoke to her on the phone yesterday. She said he was a great friend. And my father knew Jaime Taccetta - she worked at the hospital when he had surgery a year & a half ago, and they kept in touch over facebook even after he got out. He said she was always so nice and chatting about her fiance.
