summer services

Ds is receiving SP and OT 1x week as maintenance, since he regresses over breaks.

I went to the SP office and he went right in and they had a good time. When he came out, she told me what they did and how well he was speaking. But then asked me what was she supposed to work on with him. ????

umm...shouldn't they have the IEP? They have been providing him services since Jan (well at his daycare, different SP), but shouldn't they look at his file or something. I'm not the expert here. or shouldn't she have asked me this before the session?

I told her what I understand the issue to be, but I'm a little annoyed. or should i relax b/c it's only summer maintenance?

They should definitely have a copy of his IEP, including his summer goals. Can she speak with the SLP who worked with him previously? Is it the same agency?

Re: summer services

The service providers should either have a printed out copy of the IEP or access to the IEP on the Internet. This info Is provided by the agency the service providers work for and the agency recevives the info from the school district (if CPSE or CSE). Sometimes the school districts are slow in getting the info to the agency and sometimes the agency is slow in getting the info to the provider. It's ultimately the providers responsiblity to hound the agency to get and send the IEP and any other info needed.

same agency...different SLP They should have his old IEP, not sure when the new one goes into effect, but this is for maintenance, so I would think that working on the old goals would be fine.

It's possible it had not arrived by the first visit--DS got a new IEP for the summer, but it just arrived at his center today.

Re: summer services

Agencies tend to get the IEP very late. In fact, I am often taken back by how a service provider will just go about a session without an IEP, and even when there is an IEP, I am not so sure all therapists come up with "lessons" to match some of those objectives. It's rather upsetting at times.

Any decent therapist is trained to evaluate areas of strengths and weakness both formally and informally. The IEP is the minimum we have to address goal wise. With young children, the first few sessions should be about building trust and rapport with the child, gaining info from the parents/caregivers and assessing the child's skills at this point informally. It makes it a heck of a lot easier to have a recent report/evaluation and an IEP/IFSP to give a starting point. And sometimes the goals Su*k! I've picked up kids for OT services and there goals were totally inappropriate, for example I am currently treating a severely impaired school aged boy at home who is blind, has no language, very cognitivlely impaired, and he has a goal that he will visually orient towards objects and will respond appropriately to fire alarms, teachers instructions
etc... Chat Icon Who they heck made those goals? I jus t ignored them and focused on more appropriate goals and changed them on the IEP at my first opportunity.
