I stopped in first grade. I am a boy mommy but
i heard from some of the girl mommies that princesses are DONE in first grade. Sad right? Hopefully someone else can give you more first-hand experience.

As a teacher I've seen a number of children with character backpacks in 2nd grade & maybe a random 1-2 in 3rd. I think in first that is totally fine.

My son is going into 1st as well and I was wondering the same thing. I noticed really none of the the older kids at the bus stop (grades 2 and up) had them and it was mixed for 1st grade...I have a boy - was thinking of trying to get him camoflauge and saying it is army man just in case. He'll probably still want a character one so we shall see. My friend who has 3 older kids said between 2nd and 3rd grade they all phase out characters.

I never did character backpacks for Damien and none of his classmates (boys) had them by 2nd grade. The girls definitely did. I think girls will have them for a longer period than boys.

I never bought a character backpack for my kids. I only go for a character for PJs because I'm not into them.

Their aunt (who will buy them anything they want) gave them character stuff through 2nd grade. As long as it was something that was ok for that age group, they loved it. For example Pirates of the Caribbean stuff, diva girly stuff, iCarly were good for 2nd grade. Dora is the kiss of death for a 1st grader. Disney Princesses were on the fence in 1st grade. Diva stuff was the easiest transition from Disney Princesses.

This post makes me so sad. To think that in a year or two my DD will be "too cool" for disney princesses or anything character related.

We were at Target yesterday, and DD was looking at backpacks for KG and she picked out a dora and a princess one.

DS just finished 2nd grade, and he didn't have a character BP. I don't recall seeing any other kids in 2nd grade with them either. He had one in 1st grade, though.
