Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I think you'll get the "keeping up with the jones'" anywhere you go. I have no problem with it, nor does DH because it wouldn't phase us.. however I dont know if I want my kids exposed to it. It's a lot of pressure. After reading all your responses (and thank you for ALL of them!) I think it really comes down to the impression we get after spendign some time there. I've gotten that feeling of more city like in SS... and more picturesque on NS. We've looked at houses ALL OVER LI... from Greatneck and GC all the way to Kings park! We're finally settled on Seaford, Merrick/Bellmore on SS and Jericho/Syosset on NS. Tmorrow afternoon we're going to an open house in Seaford. Im in love with it! Going to spend some time out there tomorrow-maybe do my shopping go for lunch/dinner, etc to get a feel for it. Then next weekend we'll do the same on the NS. I should mention we've been looking for almost 2 years! I finally feel like we're getting closer! Thank you again everyone!!

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
Good luck! Definitely drive around and explore the areas you are interested in.
If you have questions about any specific neighborhoods in Seaford, Merrick, or Bellmore -- let me know! As I said, I grew up in Seaford and now live in N. Bellmore.
FYI - Bellmore and Merrick both have a "village" area with stores, restaurants, movie theaters (in Bellmore, it's Bedford Ave., just north of Sunrise, and in Merrick, it's on Merrick Ave, just north of Sunrise). Seaford doesn't really have that, but it is also a great community with great parks (Seaman's Neck, Cedar Creek) and neighborhoods (you will probably want to check out the Hidden Harbor area south of Merrick Rd. and Seaford Manor (north of Sunrise).

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
It's funny... I grew up on the North Shore and we bought our house on the South Shore. I would have never thought I would live here but I absolutely love it! Different vibe, less traffic, highways are more accessible, closer to beaches, more main street towns, etc. I can see the plus and minus to both I'm just saying keep an open mind you might surprise yourself!

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I always loved to go to the North Shore and visit my relatives, I thought I would love to live there. But I grew up on the south shore and I decided to stay .. I am so glad I did. I love it here.. My bff lives in Syosset. although her neighborhood is beautiful as well I just dont like the vibes there. I cant say why or even explain this but I just feel more at home here . I dont think this helped you but drive around and get your own vibes .. GL

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I Was born and raised North Shore and I am now a home owner on the North Shore but further east. One is not better than the other and it depends on the level of comfort you have with roadways and travel and proximity to water I suppose. I go to the South Shore and I am a fish out of water - One of my kids has a doctor in Woodmere and I dread going there because from where I am, its a convoluted trip.

I grew up in Jericho and graduated HS there.
The school district is amazing. However, there was a lot of competition among residents to show and proove how wealthy they were. The competition didn't faze me.
I live in a similar community in NJ now so I am going to expose my kids to the same type of environment.
fm me with any questions you have about Jericho
This, although I graduated from Jericho almost twenty years ago. My educational experience was EXCELLENT, but the competition to have the latest and greatest everything... was a bit much. I don't want my future children to feel that kind of pressure from their peers.

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I grew up on the south shore but own a home now on the north shore and I LOOOOOVEEEE it "up here". It is a different feel from the south shore. I like that it's a little more hilly and lots of tree canopy in my neighborhood. I really would never go back to the south shore. I love it where I am!

I live in North Bellmore and looove it. I own a house in Kings Park also, (north shore) and it's just too different a vibe for me.
What is that difference? I am curious. I know both areas to some extent and I wonder what is the difference in vibe.
Well I never lived in the North Shore. I'm a Bronx girl through and through, but in 2006 we bought a house in Kings Park, and just use it as a rental. I personally need more people around me, more stores, more "life". While our house in KP is situated beautifully, right near the water, the neighborhood is too "country" lol. I'm not used to that, though many love peace and quiet. Last year we bought in North Bellmore and love it. We are close to the city (where dh and i both work), my parents in the Bronx, and I just love more "traffic". Our neighbors aren't spaced out, which i like, but dh can do without. It's more a young fun vibe here, especially with the summer, and beaches and activities. One doesn't make the other better, it's just my preference why I like where I am.

Re: North Shore Vs South Shore
I find the south shore to be very crowded. My niece is 3 and will tell you "there's so much traffic on merrick road." but there are great places to eat down there! I live in East Williston which is a central but moreo n the northern side and love it. small town feel but close to everything.
