Would you lie about his age?

Since I missed the cutoff to baseball reg. for the Fall where he went to last season, there is another town that has a much better league (as we were told by his coach) that he can play for but we'd have to lie about his age? You have to be 8 yrs old by a certain date. My son won't be 8 until early Jan. His coach said to us to lie so he can play. It's machine pitched as opposed to what he just did which is kid pitched. My son kept getting hit with the ball since the kids are pitching and he's a lefty. So, to us he's never going to learn to play since he never gets to swing at the ball. He gets frustrated and bored really quickly with that. Anyway, his coach said they wished they had done that when he first started playing but didn't know about the age cutoffs. So my question is, would you lie to get him on a better baseball team? It's not that far off in age and my son is very tall for his age so he already looks older. Honestly, my DH and I want to. WDYT? Thanks!

ETA: I know, we're bad parents! Chat Icon But I know we're not the only one's to have done this.

I would but I'd also take the boy down to the batting cages and get hims practicing on his swing.

I would but are you sure they won't require a birth certificate?

Re: Would you lie about his age?

We did that with my son. My husband's parents did that growing up.

The only downside is that he could always be playing "up".

However, you said you went to a different league, so next year if you go back to your old league, he will go back to his age group.

Re: Would you lie about his age?

I think they only ask for it for 5 yr olds just to make sure they're not too young. I see it being requested to see but only for 5 yr olds? T-ball, basketball, etc.

And yes, he could go back to the other league next year if we wanted to. That age group is 7-9 and this one is 8-9. I think we're going to like the 8-9 much better. Chat Icon It's a little further away, but run so much better. And the kids aren't getting belted in the face by a baseball from an inexperienced kid pitching.

No I wouldn't lie.

I'd rather ask to see if the league will make an exception.

What do you do want he wants to invite his baseball team to his birthday party?

Or when he talks about his age?

Re: Would you lie about his age?

I know you're out of state but in my town, I'm assuming all of LI is the same, they ask for the birth certificate with a raised seal for everything.

As far as the lying about it, I absolutely would not. I wouldn't want to put that burden on my son and I'm not sure how I'd explain my lie to him. Then to tell them that lying is not OK would feel too hypocritical, KWIM?

Re: Would you lie about his age?

Never lie.

Two stories:

When my brother was playing baseball, there was a kid that was so tall and such a strong pitcher. People questioned it and found out that the parents had been lying since he started baseball. By the time he was the oldest age in the league, he was really 1 year older than all the other kids. The entire team got disqualified from playing any more that season.

Second story, when I was around 10 years old, I was on a private track and field team. I was a high jumper and had made it to the semi finals, always coming in 2nd to this one other girl who I'd become friendly with. One day, at the semi-finals, (this was a 8 week track meet) she told me that she was really 11, but not to tell anyone otherwise she'd get in trouble. The goody goody I was, told my mom when I finished the event. My coach went to the organizers who questioned her and her coach and she was immediately banned from ever coming back to those meets. I was awarded 1st place for all the previous weeks and wound up winning at the finals.

Honestly, it is not worth it in the end.

No, don't lie. It's not worth it to any degree. Not to mention, you will be tip-toeing around every conversation that has to do with the kids and school.

Agreed!

And what if god-forbid something happens and he gets hurt? I can pretty much promise you his real age will come out and then you are going to have a LOT of explaining to, and probably a lot of out-of-pocket medical bills.

Don't lie.
