I do think thats kind of rude for a couple reasons.

#1 You told her in advance you had plans which you then had to cancel

#2 If I am a guest and I know someone else is paying for dinner honestly, I drink water with lemon and I make sure not to order an expensive meal. Thats just me being polite.

#3 If dinner was done and dd was in the car with dh and it was time to go, they should not have ordered more drinks!

Sorry things didnt go so well. I would be annoyed too.

Yes Yes and Yes! The exact points I was trying to make with my rambling!

I just don't know how to handle these situations.

I have to add Another of my mom's "friends" happened to be at her house recently when I offered to get take out for lunch and being polite, my mom asked if she wanted something.

The woman picked a small item then said "I have to go get money"

My mom said "my treat" so the f'ing mooch, says "oh thank you, since you'r treating, I will get XYZ too" !!!

What is wrong with people?!!

At that point I would have thrown what I owed on the table and left.. I can't believe how rude some people are. Never assume anything... Hopefully you won't be put in that position again... I am sorry that happened to you.. When ever I go out with anybody for dinner, including family, I get a separate check.. Unless plans are made earlier of who is paying...

I think the friend was sooo rude. Your kid was in the car. Eat quickly and get out.

And the money thing is so wrong on sooo many levels. Why on earth would she assume you were paying? Because DH suggested going out?

Whenever I go out with my parents either they pay or we split it. My parents would NEVER assume we were paying for them. Ever. And money is really tight for them.

I agree.

But if you're asking, I would have known going in that my DH will be taking out his wallet. He hates letting his mom pay & would definitely treat her friend.

Either way though they were rude.

Totally rude.

Not only that, and I am not trying to start drama, but I think many people are just clueless on picking up the signals with young children, when it's time to call it a night.

I am sorry you were put into this situation.

I would be totally annoyed.

First, with my mom. She knew you had plans and totally disregarded that. It's rude.

Second, if someone who was a part of our party is waiting for us out in the car because of an unruly child, it's time to wrap it up - get Carvel on the way home!

Third, I guess she just assumed that because DH suggested it he was willing to foot the bill. I still think it's rude not to at least offer to chip in or leave the tip ESPECIALLY because she was the only one drinking. Unbelievable.

I totally think the whole situation was rude. Did you say anything to your mom afterwards? I definitely would, not in a confrontational way, but to let her know that it bothered you and that you had to cancel your plans that she knew about.

Obnoxious!
In the next conversation you have with your mom, I'd be honest and tell her "Wow, can't believe how rude xyz was, making us pay for the dinner" or something like that!

Definitley hint to your mom that you're upset! Some people just don't "get it".

I did not know what to say, dh laughed out loud and in his obnoxious voice said “yep...that’s what I do!”… I don’t think either my mom or her friend got it.

That sounds like something I would do. Made me chuckle.

The actions of the friend (and your mom to a level) were wrong on many levels. I think its poor-class to order drinks when you're not paying, especially when when nobody else is drinking. .

I feel obligated to offer to pay my part know matter what. Its just the right thing even if somebody else WANTS to pay.

As far as talking to your mom. I would mention it. Not harp on it. Not make an overly big deal of it. Just say something in passing about "wasn't expecting to pick up the tab on 3 margaritas." Just to keep the peace, keep it low.

Yes, normally we would pay for my mom, who doesn't ever run up a tab. If we were the ones who invited them I would also expect to pay, but the just came to my house, hung out all day, we fed them lunch, they still stayed. I kept mentioning to my mom that I was supposed to go somewhere...

Dh doesn't think it's as big a deal, but definitely was taken aback.

You need to speak up and say something to your mom. Her behavior was inappropriate and rude and she needs to know about it.

I think it's really rude for someone to assume that they are being paid for. If it were me, I would've said something to my mom afterwards to figure out exactly why that happened.

I would be more than annoyed- I'd be pi$$ed. I don't understand why some people expect to be paid for. IMO, paying for your mom is one thing, but paying for her friend who clearly took advantage ordering all those drinks, is too much.
