External Cephallic Version Yesterday

Hi Ladies,

I posted last week prior to having my External Cephallic Version yesterday to try to turn our frank breech baby. I wanted to post for any moms-to-be to let you know about the procedure in case you were to find yourself in this position. IN addition, if you had one I am really curious how you felt after--are you glad you did it? Was it painful for you? Did yours work?

I did not understand why so many women I spoke to were adamant about not having the procedure. I did a lot of research (read medical jourmals) and tehy confirmed what my doctor said that the procedure was NOT harmful to the baby. What my OB (covering for my DR on maternity leave) said was it might be uncomfortable but it is worth a shot despite the only 40-50% success rate. Why do doctors speak in euphemisms when it comes to pain. I have a high threshold for pain but OMG this was excruciating. Not only was it horribly painful but it did not work. I guess if doctors were honest about just how painful it was they know we might not do it?????

Its funny......I am sitting here still really sore and in pain where they pushed baby's butt out of my pelvis to try to turn and not sure if I am sorry I tried. I wonder if I had not tried whether I would have been mad at myself. I really wanted a natural childbirth. I will be booking my section but feel like at least I tried. Any thoughts?

Ang

My thoughts are that you're a brave lady who was willing to do anything to help your baby. Don't be down on yourself - you went to pretty extreme measures (a lot of women refuse this procedure, from what I've read on here) to try to have a natural birth and do the best for your baby. Now, after your c-section, you won't always wonder "what if...?"

Good luck and wishing you a speedy recovery from your section. Must be pretty soon now! Chat Icon

DC2 was frank breech and thankfully flipped at 37 weeks. But I would not have done that procedure. I was just scared. I give you credit for trying. At least you tried. And you may get lucky and LO will flip.

Thanks ladies for the kind words. I have been psychologically preparing myself for a section and I think I am glad I at least tried. However, if there are mom's out there faced with this descision, they should know everything about it, which I get the sense doctors do not prepare women for. Thank god for boards like these to help you make these tough choices.

Thanks for posting your experience! With my last baby she was breech until 36 weeks, she turned at the last minute, and I know I would have tried the version if she hadn't. What worked for me was going to a chiropractor certified in the Webster technique. Have you been to a chiropractor? If you're open for trying maybe they could get your baby to turn. Chat Icon

Thanks Stephanie. I was thinking about the chiropractor although I was told it is not that sucessful. Other women from this board also recommemded spinningbabies.com. I tried exercises that obviously did not work. Looks like our baby is just strong-willed and stubborn and isnt even out yet! Chat Icon

I'm sorry you had such an awful experience! I'm a chiropractor and the Webster technique is much more successful than external cephallic version. Typically the only time it doesn't work is if something is blocking or preventing the baby from turning (umbilical cord around baby). I highly suggest finding one that uses this technique, good luck! Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.
