Did you change the locks when you moved to your new house (and other questions!)

What about the toilet seats? Did you hire a cleaning crew to clean the house before you moved in or do it yourself once all your stuff was in?

Anything else I am forgetting?

Re: Did you change the locks when you moved to your new house (and other questions!)

I cleaned BEFORE my stuff was in.. I'm a stickler for cleaning and while I've had a cleaning lady on and off for years, I still do a better job lol (it's mental).

yes, I changed the locks as well.. I don't know who had sets of keys to the house and didn't want that in the back of my mind.

I also changed the toilet seats.. I skeeve things like that.

New toilet seats and new locks...those were the first things to be done.

My house was clean when I moved in...in fact, the owner was still wiping down the kitchen when we walked in.Chat Icon

Re: Did you change the locks when you moved to your new house (and other questions!)

I didnt change the locks because we were getting new doors a few months later. If I wasnt, I would have changed them.

We werent moving in any furniture so cleaning first was easy. I did it myself.

I changed the toilet seats ASAP!

We werent keeping the rugs but if I was I would probably have wanted to get them professionally cleaned.

new lock and new toilet seats.

The sellers hired a cleaning crew for us but we cleaned again before we moved in. We had 2 week old babies and wanted it as clean as possible.

We changed the toilet seats immediately after we got the keys! The locks we didn't change until we were done with all the work on the house (we didn't move in right away) since we didn't have anything in the house and we were giving keys to the painter, floor guy, etc.

We cleaned EVERYTHING immediately upon possession and again after all the work was done before we moved in.

Yes, I changed the locks right away... Actually only 1... I didnt see the need for 2... We usually only lock the one we bought

No, didnt change toilet seats... Didnt see much of a need... They were in good condition...

We cleaned the house ourselves once we moved all our things in... We had no other option...

One thing you might want to do is have the rugs cleaned... whether you do it yourself or have someone come in...

ETA: I see im in the minority of the toilet seat changing! Dont I feel dirty now... lol The thought never even crossed my mind

We change the locks and toilet seats right away! We cleaned the place ourself but the lady we bought from left it spotless.

If you have carpet, have it cleaned before you move in.

Yes to changing the locks and the toliet seats. We did our own cleaning from top to bottom. It's so nasty cleaning other people's filth but it had to be done!

We changed the toilet seats and locks. Had the carpets professionally cleaned. Other than that we did the cleaning.

Re: Did you change the locks when you moved to your new house (and other questions!)

We always do the locks and toilet seats immediately. We are moving in the day we are closing and the closing is in the afternoon so there's no time for a cleaning before we move in. I will clean the bathrooms and kitchen top to bottom myself while the movers are bringing in our stuff.

We are putting in new carpets and having the upstairs painted the next morning so I'm not going to bother even putting our stuff up there until the work is done. I will vaccum the hardwoods on the main level, but probably won't clean them until we are mostly unpacked since it's going to get filthy with the movers coming in and out.

We considered having someone come in and clean, but my entire house will be stored in the garage and main level until the work in the bedrooms and basement is done, so I'm not sure its worth it.

What do you fear exactly is on the toilet seats that could get on you even after cleaning it?

We changed the locks immediately, since who knows how many people might have a copy of the old keys.

We didn't change the seats, though. I sit on a seat that is used by thousands of butts in public restrooms. As long as it's clean, I don't see the need.

Yes! esp with the shelf liners! I think I was only skeeved by mine b/c they were older and she had lined them so I needed to cover her lining. (if that makes sense)

We reno'd the bathrooms and ripped up all the carpeting to the hardwood underneath. We would have replaced toilet seats had we kept the bathrooms.

We cleaned before, during, and after renovations. Had a professional come in and do the inside and a window cleaner come to do the windows and gutters.

Invest in a good pair of gloves.

We were going to redo everything in the next few months so we did a deep clean, and then few months later renovations.

We didn't change the locks right away but, we changed the toilet seats.

We cleaned ourselves before we moved in - in retrospect, we should've hired someone since the house had been vacant for a few months nad not thoroughly cleaned before that (older couple who were moved to assisted living).

changed the locks after the painter was done, right before we moved in.
I didn't find a need to change the toilet seat, I bleached them like I did the rest of the house!
Didn't hire a cleaning service, I scrubbed every inch with myself and bleached anything i could... floors were redone and every wall and molding was painted, so didn't have to clean that Chat Icon
