ITA! That's horrific! If I donated to a charity and found out the employees took home what I bought, I'd be LIVID! How dare they! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. It's a complete disgrace.

I would report them, it is flat out stealing and disgusting.

Is it your personal opinion they are struggling? Honestly at least they have a job, although they don't even deserve to have one!

I saw a report the other day that said that about half of all theft that occurs in retail locations is perpetrated by employees of the company. In places like that people know exactly what they're stealing and what they're worth. Now take your example and it's a place where you're giving away things basically for free. You can see how easy the temptation would be to steal. The people probably don't even consider it "stealing" though that's what it is. Chat Icon

Sorry but not only am I disgusted, I'd be reporting those people to the Executive Director or Board or whoever oversees them. I work for a not-for-profit as an administrator and wouldn't tolerate this type of abuse of the system for one minute!

My boss actually IS the executive director, which really makes me Chat Icon at the whole situation. So the only people I could really go to is the board of directors....IF that was something I chose to do.

Yeah, you need to go to the board, with proof. B/C if you know about this, someone else does too and if it is reported and it is found out YOU KNEW about this and did nothing, you'll be held to some degree of responsibility. You will be protected under your Whistler Blower policy for reporting them.

If you are Medicaid funded, you also need to report this to OMIG. There was just a huge expose in NY Times about the Levy Brothers and YAI and abuse of Medicaid $$. They both resigned!

Yeah, really! It's probably one of my co-workers! Chat Icon

I agree with all of you who said it should be reported....I just am not sure if I'm ready to do that. I had a similar type of situation at one of my previous jobs where I wanted to report the director to the board, but because the agency was (and is currently) so small, I was afraid of any repercussions. You could always write an anonymous letter.

You never know there could be really nice people donating who don't have much themselves, but have good hearts and it isn't fair to them.

Or I think about the families that finally have to suck it up and accept help and how that much feel, then to find these employed people are stealing???

It isn't fair. At all.

Not trying to tell you what to do, just trying to help you understand how you could be seen as complacent and therefore held to some degree of wrong doing for NOT reporting this. Your job should have a policy to protect "whistler blowers" and if not, consult an employment attorney. Maybe go through HR and express your concern over repercussions. Just from my own experience, anonymous letters do not usually hold much weight as they are often though to be from former, jilted employees looking to start problems. GL in your decision.

I would not want to work for someone who was that morally corrupt, so I would probably report him to the board of directors, and look for another job

OMIG is a good place to start. If you have a compliance department/person, they should have a number that you can report things like this to as well.

Reprehensible, IMO. An executive director SURELY makes enough money to be able to do basic grocery shopping!

Actually, that is a crime. I will try and find a link, but in Westchester people were arrested for that exact same thing. They were taking clothes from the nonprofit that they worked for and they were arrested.

Re: Would you take food from your job that was meant for the needy?

I voted other. After college, I was in a volunteer program and one of my roommates worked at a food bank. She would regularly bring home the day old bread and bakery products, because they would have been thrown away otherwise. She also brought home items other times when there was a huge excess - cases of things being donated. This was all done after her supervisor told her to do so. We never had a problem with it, because they were items that were either going to go to waste or sit around the food bank for months, taking up space that they needed for new donation. I also worked with clients that were elgible for these items on paper that had more money coming into their homes than what I was living on.

I do have a problem with it if the food bank is giving their employees items that their clients can and will use if the employee didn't really need it. I have known several people who have worked at food banks and none of them are living large. JMO.

Here's a link to the state site, there's some emails and links at the bottom that may be a good starting place.

If they don't have the capacity to store the donations can they bring them or direct them to another food bank that may be in need?

That seems ridiclous. People are starving.

This was in another state, in a rural area where there was not another facility in the county - not an area like LI. Also, they didn't want to turn down donations for fear of not receiving them from those donors (mostly factories and large supermarkets) in the future.

Re: Would you take food from your job that was meant for the needy?

We had a similar situation in my school last year. I work in a high-poverty area, and we get a grant each year so the kids can have fruit for snack. My kids were really good at counting out the right number for our class, but sometimes kids didn't want what was offered. Apples, pears, etc. are one thing, because I'd always tell the kids to take them home. But when you get a little plastic baggie of grapefruit sections, kiwi and the like, it won't make it until the end of the day.

Once it left the cafeteria, we weren't allowed to bring it back--so a few times, I came home with extra fruit.

I voted "no way" because in the situation, it sounds like they are abusing the system.

I would only take home perishable items that were on the way to the trash.
